The Gathering: The 2nd TagCom Convention

The TagCom Convention was extremely fun, but drained my wallet. I have Php 500 to live on until next payday. Ugh, Marvel Legends. The event was great, though. Those guys are super-geeks, and I’m nowhere near in their league of geeky; a fact that seriously puts me to shame.

VENUE

TagCom 2 was held at Gateway, Araneta Center, Cubao, which is probably the place in The Philippines easiest to get mugged in broad daylight, while a cop stares at you as he rubs his belly. Finding the mall was easy enough; it’s very accessible via the MRT. Finding the event venue itself was a little bit trickier. As you can see from the poster above, it doesn’t exactly give you the most concrete facts about where it’s going to take place. I guess they assumed geeks herd together like cattle naturally. What I did was follow the cosplayers. Trust me, it’s really easy to spot a robot with foam and cardboard swords.

I got there at around 10:30 or 11:00AM. I was told that the event started at around 10:00, an hour after the mall’s opening, I guess. No matter how early I got there, the place was already really packed. It was like walking through the streets of a wet market somewhere in China Town, although it did smell… wait, actually, yeah, the scent was quite similar. It was a mixture of nerd sweat and Chinese plastic.

The place itself was tiny, and there were a lot of stalls. The area was designed in such a way that it maximized the space for those selling their wares, which is good, but minimized foot traffic, which kinds defeats the purpose and is bad. Maybe they can hold it at Megamall next time or something.

Along the hallway going into the area, it was incredibly hot. You’d see cosplayers passing out from heat strokes. Inside though, the airconditioning was blasting full power. No matter how crowded or packed it got, it was still nice and cool inside, which made a lot of people a lot less cranky.

MERCH

Ah, yes, the merchandise. I spent all my spendable money for this month during that event. I don’t regret any of my purchases, but still feel like kicking myself in the head for it. That being said, it doesn’t come as any surprise to me that there was something there for a member of any fandom, whether it be DC or Marvel or giant robots or cars or sentai or animé.

Everything was sold at a very reasonable price, especially the comics. A friend of mine got a sketch variant of Ultimate Iron Man (I forget which issue) and it’s as if he put a knife to the throat of the guy selling it to him. He might as well have considering how cheap he got it.

Figures were being sold, bartered and bargained for everywhere. I was looking for a masked Astonishing X-men costumed Wolverine (the masked one), and I was only about ten minutes late- someone already bought it. Although there was one stall selling it along with the complete Apocalypse collection for Php 5,000. Now, it does seem a bit steep, but considering you’re getting a masked Wolvie along with it, it’s a bargain.

I’ll be sure to be back next time, and this time, I’ll bring more money and be there even before the malls opens. I’m gonna camp out like a Star Wars geek in front of Lucas’ front yard. If you want that rare figure, you better be damned there earlier than me.

There were tons of collection displays, too. The pic below is Cypher’s collection. I don’t know who Cypher is, but I bet I’d love to be his friend. There were displays of DC collections, RC cars, and Hellboy. If you own any of those displays, know that I wish I was as rich as you, and if you’d like to have a brother, tell your parents to adopt me.

Apart from the recently marketed toys, the stalls were also selling a lot of vintage stuff. You know, the type of stuff that fetches for ridiculously high prices- feed-a-family-for-a-day prices.

Some of the favorites of the day were the G.I. Joe collections, the old Transformers stuff, a lot of old WWE/WWF figures, vintage Marvel and DC stuff, and a lot of things I don’t really remember. Most of them really deliver a jolt of nostaliga- the kind where you go "Goddamn it, I was such a geek when I was a kid" while you tweak your glasses, drink your sugar-free iced tea and take a puff from your anti-asthma inhaler.

COSPLAY

This is where this event really shined for me. It didn’t hurt that I could look for free, too.

The costumes were very well-made. You can really see the love, the effort and the money these guys really put into making these costumes. A costume didn’t consist of just putting a green towel on your head and bringing around a plastic archery set, then calling yourself Green Arrow, or wearing a bastketball jersey and calling yourself Sakuragi Hanamichi. No, it’s like they jumped out of TV and walked around. Their geekiness is almost awe-inspiring.

Of course, in any cosplay event, everyone’s got their favorites. I’m not so into animé, though if one of the comicology contributors hears me say that, she’d slap me with a skillet, so I wasn’t really familiar with most of the characters they were going as. Luckily, there were a lot of guys who went as characters I could easily recognize. These guys probably get a rush when people come up to them and instanly recognize who they’re cosplaying as- hell, I know I would.
