Bucky!Cap? Yay or Nay?
March 7, 2008So it’s been a couple months since the new Cap has been introduced. And really, who didn’t know this wasn’t coming? We all had our wishes and guesses for the next Cap was gonna be. From the ones I talked to, it ranged from Tony Stark to Clint Barton to John Walker to MVP. No matter how much you hoped against hope that it wouldn’t be Bucky, you always knew it was coming.
So, okay, he’s here, and he’s been at it for two issues now. How’s he doing so far?
Let’s examine the pros:
- A costume that kinda grows on you. Like fungi.
- History with the original Cap makes him the only Cap that makes sense
- Stopped AIM soldiers
- He’s like a son trying to live up to his iconic, god-like father who went toe-to-toe with frickin’ Thanos of Titan
Now, onto the cons:
- The costume sucks, really. Well, it doesn’t suck suck, it just lacks the oomph and iconage of the original costume.
- He took down AIM soldiers by knee-capping them. Okay, this might actually be a pro. But thing is, if our measuring stick is the original Cap, then this would be unthinkable.
- He’s got too high a mountain to climb. He’s nowhere near the love the original Cap might be getting.
Yeah, so he looks like he’s doing a pretty good job, hm? I personally like this new Bucky!Cap. He doesn’t have the super soldier serum, so he isn’t as strong or as agile as Steve, but what makes a character great isn’t the powers he possesses, but rather how he uses them as well as possible within a certain storyline or arc. Besides, who doesn’t love the underdog, right?
If I had a choice, would I want the original Cap to return? Well, yeah, definitely. But it depends on how they bring him back. So, please, no punching of the timeline like an emo angst ridden teenageer, cool? Goddamn Superboy Prime. And no "I was captured by the Skrulls all along. I would’ve gone for registration had I known!" bullshit, either, okay?
But I’m sure we can all rest easy. If Ed Bru is writing it, I’m sure it won’t be as ridiculous as if Bendis or Joe Q were to do it.
So, what say you, all four of you who read this (including my mother)? YAY OR NAY?

This sort of reminds me of when Dick Grayson took the Batman mantle, and how I was rooting him on all the way, and I choked up a bit when he said something like “I’ve been waiting forever for you to ask me.” or some shit like that.
I’m just not as attached to Cap’s lore, so it doesn’t hit me the same way. Course Bruce got he Batman label back after a shit ton of crossovers, so you KNOW how this is gonna end up. Publishers need money, son, so they don’t care how bad they rip up your continuity, long as you keep filling their pockets.
