Manga Corner: Children Can’t Choose Their Parents by Meicdon13
April 5, 2008Children Can’t Choose Their Parents is an eight-page oneshot manga by Mihara Mitsukazu. Simply put, it’s about a boy, Mika, and his pet chicken. To be a little bit clearer, it’s about Mika, his chicken, and their relationship. To be crude, it’s about Mika fucking his chicken.
We start the manga with Mika and Fabian, the chicken, in bed. Mika’s thinking about how he’ll tell his best friend, Daren, about his new girlfriend. This is the only scene in the entire thing where we see Mika having sex with Fabian. Thankfully–or not, depending whether you’re into that sort of thing or not–it’s not explicit. The best you can see is Mika’s naked torso and Fabian’s wings.
Daren is initially happy for his friend but understandably freaks out when introduced to Fabian. To quote him, "That’s a friggin’ hen! It belongs on the dining table, for Pete’s sake!" To which Mika replies, "Don’t insult my girlfriend!" Daren uneasily accepts Mika’s love for Fabian as a hobby and drops it.
The climax of the entire thing is when Mika finds out that Fabian has laid eggs and tells Daren that they’re going to have babies. They’re in Mika’s apartment when Daren finds out and he freaks out once more and proceeds to shout at Mika, telling him that there’s no way that those eggs will hatch. Mika becomes slightly depressed and says, "I know I’m not crazy. But I could at least dream about it, right?" Daren apologizes when they suddenly see that the eggs have begun to hatch.

Yes, folks, the eggs are actually hatching. Now, I don’t if everyone knows this, but eggs won’t hatch unless they’ve been fertilized. So a hen can lay a bunch of them and they won’t hatch unless said hen had sex with a rooster. Back to the manga.

The eggs are hatching and we are granted glimpses of what’s inside. There’s something that looks like a little human in the first egg and what could be the top of the head of a chick in the second egg. Daren and Mika both freak out and much shouting ensues.

The last page is interesting. We see Mika and Daren sitting on the couch, Mika holding Fabian and sobbing and apologizing. Daren tells him to stop crying because it’s not his fault. In the last panel, we’re shown a book on top of some egg shells and a pool of what might be egg yolk or blood. So. They squashed the eggs and whatever was coming out of them with a book.
I really like the art in the manga; it’s simple and clean and call me shallow, but I find Daren and Mika good-looking. Daren’s outfits are eccentric and actually seem a bit pimp-ish–he even has a cane with the first outfit–while Mika’s clothes are a bit more regular. Daren’s expressions are priceless; he’s always either disgusted or shouting. Mika’s a bit more static but the surprised look on his face when he sees that Fabian’s laid eggs was well-drawn, in my opinion.

Call me weird, but I find the relationship between Mika and Fabian sweet. I have no idea what Fabian thinks about her owner but Mika obviously takes care of her and loves her. To quote him, "We’re deeply in love with each other. We eat from the same plate and sleep on the same bed." He has terms of endearment for Fabian and tells her that their love will last forever. He tells Daren that he raised Fabian from a little chick to suit his tastes. Think about all the time and devotion and care he bestowed upon that chicken
.

Now, I’m a psych student so I feel entitled to try and dissect Mika’s motives. In page two, Daren says, "So, it’s true that you’ve found yourself a new girlfriend after all this time?" I don’t know about you guys, but that sort of tells me that something happened to Mika some time ago and that something involved a girlfriend. Maybe the reason why he turned to a chicken for comfort and companionship has something to do with this past event. Maybe I’m just reading too much into Daren’s line since I adore him.
Out of ten stars, I give this manga nine.

It is weird. But weirdly enough, that’s not the weirdest thing Japan has ever produced.
