Danny Rand waves goodbye to Ed Brubaker, Matt Fraction and David Aja
April 9, 2008As a lot of probably already know, the trio that turned the former B-lister superhero, Iron Fist, into one of today’s most beloved and popular characters is leaving the book after Immortal Iron Fist #16. Furthermore, a whole lot of us probably also know that some dudes Duane Swiercynski and Travel Foreman will take the helm of Iron Fist as writer and artist, respectively. I haven’t even heard of Swiercynski before. How does one even pronounce that?!
I have loved Immortal Iron Fist from the very start of their run. Bru’s run on Daredevil made me his bitch. Matt’s run here made me his bitch. Aja’s work on Iron Fist can easily be qualified as some of my favorite panels in my entire history of being a geek..
The trio really made Immortal Iron Fist, the title, into a runaway success and picked Iron Fist, the character, from 2nd tier to top tier. They built an entirely new mythos around him, gave him a few nifty tricks, and updated his costume so that he wouldn’t look ridiculous anymore. Good job, guys.

This new team, as said in this interview, was recommended by Brubaker and Fraction. That fills me with a teeny tiny bit of confidence, but I’m still deathfully afraid that the title’ll go belly-up. The magic of Iron Fist was crafted from the Awesomesauce of Ed Brubaker and Matt Fraction and David Aja. And going into issue 17, we’ll all be tasting something entirely different.
It’s like trying anal sex for the very first time, some people will like it, and some people might not, but the fact of the matter is, someone’s penis is going to be covered on poo.
I want to see characters like Fat Cobra and Prince of Orphans back. I want it to have the same dialogue and feel. I want to see shit like this-

IGN has Duane whats-his-face in an interview, you can read it right here. Hmmm… Okay, I guess we’ll just all have to wait and see. I’m very very nervous, but I’m willing to wait it out and see what happens.
Matt, Ed and David… thanks for the memories.

Hey, Liz. You are aware that I’m riffology from LJ, right? Because you seem to hate me over there.
But hey, thanks for dropping by!
I heard that Duane “unspellable last name” Swierczynski wrote Cable. Still, I gotta wait and see with this one. I don’t want Iron Fist to turn all serious and noir-like.
Posted by comicology at April 14, 2008, 12:23 amhahaha. Yes, I am aware. I don’t hate you. I reserve hate for people I know better. And hey, you can dish it out, so I figure you know how to take it too. :p I promise, if I ever see you in person, I’ll buy you a beer. Or two. Or three.
Yeah, he did. I’ve only read the first issue of Cable. I wanted to find out what he’d do with it. It was pretty sparse though. And I really don’t know how to feel about Cable being stuck with a baby. It feels too much like a bad comedy or tv-movie of the week.
I know, I know. We gotta wait and see. But I’ve got a good feeling about it and all - so here’s hoping.

Beer sounds like a good idea. If my memory serves me correctly, you live really really far away from me, in a city I’ve sworn to burn to the ground if ever I do get super powers.
The whole Cable with baby thing is something I like, actually. Although yes, now that you mention it, it does sort of seem like a good premise for a sitcom. However, it makes me feel like Cable’s actually doing something monumental.
Hey, if you’re hopeful, then so will I be.

I’ve been Ed Brubaker’s bitch for a long time - and no signs of me ever being released from my bondage since Criminal is my favorite monthly now.
But I’m not so worried about Duane Swierczynski taking over. I think he’s a solid writer. His crime novels are fun and imaginative and tightly written. Obviously, we’ll have to wait and see, but I’m more than a little curious and excited to see where he can take Danny Rand.
