Comic Book Reviews! The Secret Invasion Continues!

This week’s list is, once again, pretty small. This is largely due to the fact that I am poor, practically homeless and the only way I survive is to whore myself out every night at a place called Quezon Circle.

I know that I probably won’t be able to convince anyone to buy these titles, but just so you know, my opinions are totally awesome.

This time around, a perfect score would be five out of five iron fists:

Amazing Spider-man 557

Written by Zeb Wells, Pencis by Chris Bachalo

I thoroughly enjoyed Wells and Bachalo’s run. This particular issue is the end of their run for the time being, until he grabs hold of the reigns again after the other writers drag the title through some water buffalo crap again.

The story gets unraveled as you would expect a final issue of an arc would do, but things aren’t what they seem. Although the plot kinda borders on the ridiculous, having binary operating systems from some dimension of winter gods and whatnot, it was still pulled off well- comic-book believable.

Spidey had a lot of lovable moments, and this is the kind of thing I always thought made Spider-Man adorable in the first place. Plus, there’s this character that I really like- the bum whose name escapes me at the moment. Carlie is also growing on me, and I am afraid that I may end up liking her more than Mary Jane Watson.

The art is still good. I’m aware that there are a lot of people who don’t like Bachalo’s art for some reason or another, but I really like how his art moves.

That being said though, I still feel Brand New Day wasn’t necessary for this storyline.

Daredevil: Blood of the Tarantula

First off, I have to say that the cover is one of my favorites for this month. The image of Daredevil holding barbed wire is fucken’ bad ass.

It’s a one-shot so we can’t really expect much. The continuity is there, so that’s a plus, but there’s not really much to continue, because this is more of the Black Tarantula’s story than it is Daredevil’s. In fact, Daredevil’s takes a supporting role in this thing, forcing himself into the picture, because it’s his title. However, that’s not to say that it’s bad.

The story itself is a nice way of redeeming Black Tarantula from his criminal past. For those who might find that interesting, it’d probably be a very awesome story. Somehow, the story was too much of a forumla, really, like a cheesy daytime action soap. It’s fairly disappointing, but it works as a one-shot.

What redeems this is the way in which is was told. The dialogue is very dramatic, gritty and artistic in its own right. It just hit really hard.

The art seems very similar to regular artist, Michael Lark’s style, which is very welcome, in my book.

New Avengers 40

How does one rate a New Avengers book that doesn’t even show the Avengers? If you buy this book to see Luke Cage, you’re going to be sorely disappointed. However, it does explain a few things happening in Secret Invasion, and it has a few shocking moments, while further increasing the stakes for the humans and the mystique of the Skulls.

It explains a lot of why those dirty Skrulls are doing what they’re doing in the first place. It also shows a lot of their internal politics, which I find extremely amusing. It also ties in with Annihiliation, which gave me a geeky moment of "ooh! glee!"

The art is from a style I’ve always enjoyed, especially on the The Illuminati mini-series. So, plus points for the art.

New Avengers 40 gets:

Mighty Avengers 12

Nick Fury is back, and he is as awesome as ever. No, no, let’s just say he’s more awesome than that. He’s two clicks and a half of awesome more than he used to be.

I don’t know what else to add to that. It’s a return issue of one of the main players of the Marvel Universe. How can that not be cool? The last splash page is just magnificent, too, if not for a couple errors.

The art is also a big, big, big, plus, because I’ve always been a fan of Alex Maleev’s art. Man, I don’t know what else to add to this. Just buy it.

Mighty Avengers 12 gets:

Thor: Ages of Thunder

Written by: Matt Fraction/ Art by Patrick Zircher

Matt Fraction can write. Whatever tone he wants to write, he can write it. He can intricately weave a tale, and do so with sharp wit and a steady mood.

This (sort of) one-shot was very epic, with battles involving Frost Giants, hammers through the face, and general Norse god dickeries. Actually, there seems to be a lot of Norse dickery going on in these parts.

In the issue, there are two stories, one, naturally, being part 1 and the other, part 2. They’re basically two stories that could be told separately but are interconnected. The characterization is unique, meaning the characters are portrayed in a way I’m not used to, but it’s logical, because these are pre-Avengers days of Thor, and I’m guessing the characters developed; the most notable one would be Enchantress’ personality.

The treachery, the lore, the action, the way the story was told, everything was just right on the button. The art was just beautiful, and it fit the mood perfectly.

Thor: Ages of Thunder gets:

The Immortal Iron Fist 14

Written by Matt Fraction and Ed Brubaker/ Art by Tonci Zonjic, Clay Mann, and Kano

Right off the bat, the most disappointing factor here is that David Aja did not contribute any art. Actually, I think if Aja stuck with the title all throughout, instead of having a replacement trying to emulate his style, it would be the best title Marvel released in 2007/2008, bar none. Some of the most dynamic, most fluid action scenes I’ve ever seen in comics was drawn by David Aja, and Immortal Iron Fist is all about that kind of thing.

The story though is really good. It’s the ending issue to an arc, and the farewell issue for Fraction Action and Bru. They turned a B-list hero into a major A-lister, someone who can get things done and done in style. And this issue totally shows that transformation.

What I love about this end issue is that it just marked a brand new beginning in the Immortal Iron Fist story. That, plus, we get to see more Fat Cobra in the issues to come. Let’s hope the new creative team doesn’t muck the legendary run Matt Frak and Ed Bru and David Aja have built, from the ground.
