The DC Universe’s Great Return!
May 7, 2008Just in case you didn’t know, DC decided to bring Mr. Barry Allen back. He’s better known as The Flash, the one after Jay Garrick, and before Wally West. After 23 years of death, he’s back. That certainly took a while, huh?
As I’m sure most have you been spoiled already, I will now talk about what I feel about this whole thing.
Barry Allen died in 1985 during Crisis on Infinite Earths when DC decided to clean up their continuity. Barry died in that series. He died protecting the remaining Earths. What deed is more heroic than giving up your life willingly to save the entire multiverse? There are none.
Barry Allen was the martyr of the superhero universe. He was a saint! He was the guy who actually succeeded in doing what every superhero tries to do every five issues- give his or her life up for the greater good. Mr. Allen gave his life for Earths. The guy got disintegrated fer crying out loud! He ran himself to death, saving millions, until all that was left was a costume and the ring.
A lot of superheroes die and live again. Hell, Superman made it one year dead, and Captain America seems tobe coming back come Captain America 40. Green Lantern Hal Jordan has gone through so many forms after his death, but now he’s back. But Barry Allen, he stayed dead for 23 years, man. 23 years.
He was almost always liked better dead. He would show up now and again, going to the past or coming from it, and it made his brief returns such a treat, because you knew business was about to pick up. Plus, keeping him dead made his sacrifice mean that much more.
Now that he’s been ressurected in DC Universe #0, the sacrifice he made all those years ago is kinda tainted. Sure, it took him a fairly long time, but he still came back, like all heroes do if they’ve still got market value.
My biggest problem with this now is how to tell Wally West and Barry Allen apart when they’re in costume? What? The white stuff over their eyes? Those boot wings? The waist lightning? Meh.

Yeah, but they never technically killed Bucky. He was made to have never died. And Bucky came back a different character altogether.
Barry is a legend because of his sacrifice. Meaning now. -_-

My biggest problem? I can’t help but be skeptical and a little tired whenever we have another BIG! COMIC! EVENT! But if there’s anything that’s keeping me a little hopeful it’s the fact that the likes of Grant Morrison and J.G. Jones are involved. That may mean a lot of good things in store for us.
Also, I’m not a big fan of bringing back people who have had such perfect exits, but I’ve missed Barry Allen a whole lot, so I’m glad to see him. The way I see it, everything is fair game since Marvel brought Bucky back.
