In-depth Interview with Ernest Hernandez of Pinoy Statue Forums
May 11, 2008This is a fantastic time to be a comic book fan because of the multitude of comic related mediums. Being a fan lets you geek out over movies, get obsessed with animated series, or even go broke with action figures (it’s an addiction, goddamn it).
And, of course, for the really hardcore collectors, you have the statues. Ah, yes, those beautiful pieces of solidified awesome I often see displayed at special interest stores. How I’ve longed to be able to get a hold of one of those beauties. And now, I may get the chance with the help of Pinoy Statue Forums.
There is now a forum that focuses primarily on local statue collectors with a little something something on the side. There’s a lot for collectors and people whose brains are melted off with pure solidified awesome.
Recently, I had the pleasure of interviewing one of the founders of Pinoy Statue Forums. He had a lot to say about the current situation of statue collecting, both locally and internationally, the best places to purchase statues from, magnificent artists and his personal favorites.
Comicology: Hello and welcome to Comicology, Mr. Ernest Hernandez. Please tell us a little bit about yourself- things like hobbies, special interests and women you may be currently stalking, if any.
Ernest: My full name is Ernest Leo T. Hernandez and my handle at PSF is chicoboy, people there call me Ernest or Chico, and at day I run my own HR consultancy firm and at night I am a party junkie. A short list of my hobbies includes collecting comic books, toys, statues, and DVDs. I also am fond of playing various sports like basketball, tennis, table tennis, football, golf and SEPAK TAKRAW (just kidding on that one). I also love listening to music and jamming with my guitar whenever I have the free time. You would find me around Makati area either malling, watching movies, hanging out in DK or at the gym. Stalking??? More of Hollywood crushes. I like Angelina Jolie, Catherine Zeta-Jones (in her prime) and some WWE Divas Grrrr!!!

Comicology: You know, I used to play sepak takraw, too, until they deemed me too fat and deadly to participate. I currently hold the record for killing the most players with one kick.
Now, first and foremost, before we get to the juicy stuff about statue collecting, tell me about the forums you’ve started- Pinoy Statue Forums. Yeah, give us the url, too, so we can pimp it out over at Comicology.
Ernest: PSF is basically made to promote the statue collecting hobby in the Philippines and here we get to share our collection, insights and updates. One of the goals of PSF is to promote local sculptors, painters and comic book artists to the world. Our forum was born on March 21, 2007 and in that short span of time we have been able to invite foreign personalities like Statueforum.com moderators and even Randy Bowen himself, with this we are strict (in someway) of posting in English for our international personalities to understand. PSF is a recast free zone and we even have an Anti-recasting squad that makes sure that there will be no recasts sold in/from our country.

Looking forward, as part of promoting local talent, we are also talking to local comicbook artists to post their artwork in the forum. There is a big chance that we can invite foreign comic book writers from Marvel and DC to join our discussions and hopefully they would find that our country is not just rich in “boxers” but also great comic artists. It would be our greatest achievement if a member who just posts his artwork in the forum and gets hired by the Marvel or DC directly.

Can anyone just join the forums or do your members need to be known collectors?
Ernest: Definitely not! If you are an aspiring collector or you just like to look at stone sculptures and prop replicas, you are most welcome. We are also opening our doors to comic junkies to interact with our local comic book artists very soon.

Comicology: Statue collecting in the Philippines has really been soaring lately, at least from where I’m standing. But then again, I’m just too damn poor to collect those beautiful masterful works of art. How would you describe its current state, exactly?
Ernest: You will be amazed that most stone converts are toy collectors who actually find the hobby cheaper than collecting plastic. With the pricing of toys that never seem to stop going up, the gap of collecting stones and plastic is now getting smaller. For example, a set of Hasbro ML priced at 800 each, you would need at least 4000-6000 pesos to complete a set and get the build-a-figure toy and you don’t even have the variants. A Bowen Designs statue is around 8,000-11,000pesos and some sideshow pieces are priced at around 7000 and its quality over quantity. You have a piece that can last you for years to come (just don’t break it) while plastic loosen up their joints due time. (No offense to people who still collect toys, I still collect a few btw). In this hobby also, there are no hoarders (just try!).
Today, the hobby is really on the rise, our local retailers and sellers have increased by a significant number. I just don’t have the numbers to prove it but on an estimate, our country receives almost 10% of the of a every major statue run and that is why we had the attention of Bowen Designs, Sideshow and other foreign sculptors.
Unfortunately, our country has been branded as a “recaster” haven and we are on the hot list in one point of time. With the success of PSF’s anti-recasting squad of safeguarding our country form recasters and recasters wannabes, we are successful in slowly erasing this image.
Comicology: I collect toys. 
How does one acquire statues here in our backwater island? The shipping fees must be hell on you guys. Are there stores that are specifically good to go to?
Ernest: From the early stages of the hobby, people would only rely on acquiring them in the US and bringing them over here plus extra expenses on taxes and shipping. Some rely on a few retailers who ridiculously price them very high and make statue collecting only for the elite. With the decline of the dollar rates at this point of time, prices of statues became cheaper and more affordable. Right now, we have retailers like Maxicollector, Planet Krypton and Druids Keep to go to. Harry Lim (aka evilclops) and Bennet Cua (aka boost) had been supplying our “stones” for a couple of years already and we are expecting more sellers like them to come out.
Comicology: Stones, hm? I refuse to make jokes about testicles and/or hard drugs.
Since I’ve been going to a lot of conventions and whatnot, I see that there are a lot of recasts. I don’t know exactly what you would call them in your field, but as far as I know they’re called recasts. How does the community of collectors here feel about that?
Ernest: This really disheartens most of our collectors. In other international forums, we Filipinos had a few confrontations of branding our country as a recaster haven and even lead to racism comments most of the time. A few members volunteered to form the anti-recasting squad and in a short span of time, we had been able to encourage recasters to stop their operations and start their own original sculpts. A member even reported some recasts sold on ebay and was successful enough to stop the auction. They made the impression of “we are watching” to all the recasters and recasters wannabes.

Comicology: If someone’s planning to get into this, how much would you say one would spend? I, for one, would like to get into this hobby, but my job simply doesn’t pay enough (*wink wink i.ph wink wink*). I’d have to whore myself out for a few dozen consecutive nights.
Ernest: The key to this hobby is just to get what you just like and I will stress on quality over quantity. You just have 3 statues but you have something that can last you for years and even hand it down to the next generation. The key is to budget your money, release dates are usually 4-6 months from solicitation and that alone can give you time to come up with the money. Patience is a virtue here, its not like toys that you can always buy over the counter, you study first and ask yourself if it is really worth spending my money on a certain item. The difficult part is backtracking all the statues that you like, but after that, collecting is so much easier.
Comicology: I know that, with every hobby, there are favorites within the industry. Generally, who do you think are the artists or sculptors we should be looking out for? And among them, who are your favorites?
Ernest: Internationally I personally collect Bowen Designs and few Sideshows and DC Directs. Bowen Designs because of the likeness and simplicity of their works, Sideshow because of the detail and DC Direct because they are the one of the few companies accredited by DC to produce quality stats. I can also say that Sideshow and Bowen are also the favorites of our local statue community.
There are other companies like Cinemaquettes, Weta, CS Moore, Aspen, Attakus, Hard Hero, DST and Gentle Giant that also produces top notch statues but I got to win the Lottery in order to complete everything.

Locally there are 3 notable sculptors:
1. Halimaw Collectibles – Jay and Rad’s tandem they focus mainly on what is needed in the market. They even have a “wish upon a halimaw” thread that asks the members what project will they prefer to do next. Here are a few of their products.
2. Hobbymaster – former recaster turned original art supporter, Rommel Chua, focuses on the 1:4 scale. Click here to see his work.
3. FatBoy – the newest in the group focuses on 1:1 head sculpts. This is spearheaded by Richie Dela Merced (aka SpeedRacer). This link will lead you to his latest projects.

Comicology: Now, let’s bring it back to the comic universe. Are there industry favorites of comic book characters to be made into statues? If I had to guess, I’d say Spider-Man and Batman, merely because they’re two of the most popular.
Ernest: Of course! Spider-man has had the most number of statues made in different companies. Batman on the other hand had its share of statues courtesy of DC Direct. I have known some collectors that focuses their collection on a specific character. Superman, Wonderwoman, Hulk, Captian America, Hulk, Thor and Daredevil also had some loyalists in the statue collecting hobby.
