Comicology Character Spot-Light: THE SENTRY!
May 23, 2008So, if you were a superhero, and you had the power of A MILLION EXPLODING SUNS, how messed up do you think you would be? What costume would you wear? What girly color would it be? What would would you look like. I imagine, something like this-
That’s right; you’d be Mr. Robert Reynolds, The Sentry, Marvel’s sidewinding answer to Superman!
Back in 2000, Marvel promoted the first appearance of a new character, The Sentry, in a mini-series of the same name. He was said to have been created by Stan Lee even before he created the Fantastic Four. This was, of course, a hoax. It’s because he was supposed to have existed in the mind of everyone, because Dr. Strange, Reed Richards and Sentry erased him from all of our memories. Long story, read the TPB, guys.
He was, in fact, created by Paul Jenkins and Jae Lee.
For a guy the entire world has forgotten, he’s awesome. With the power of a million exploding suns, he can fly people to the sun and give em’ a very severe tan in a matter of minutes. And because of that, he’s been a New Avenger and a Mighty Avenger. How many people, besides Iron Man, can say that, hm?
S.H.I.E.L.D. says they haven’t found a way to kill The Sentry, and Iron Man can’t find a weakness. Good job, guys. He’s all-powerful, like DC’s Superman. He’s a lot like Superman, actually, from the S shield thinger to the cape and the underwear being outside the pants thing. In terms of power, they’re almost identical.
The Sentry can achieve flight, pretty much the same way Supes flies. He has superhuman strength, the limits of which are unknown. He lifts things with much ease and even broke Dr. Doom’s armor once. I don’t think that’s been done very often. He can fly so fast that he can fly things to the sun and back in a matter of minutes. But like he says, he doesn’t fly everything to the sun. His stamina and durability also have unknown upper limits. He doesn’t have heat beams from his eyeballs, but he does have energy projection of some sort. Just like Batman, he can breathe in space.
The guy even has Daredevil beat with the hypersenses. He has some sort of cosmic awareness. I guess you get that when you have the power of a million exploding suns.
Like any Superman knockoff, though, he’s gotta have his kryptonite, so to speak. I honestly believe that this weakness is what makes Sentry such an interesting character- none of that "Here’s a weird colored rock" "On no, I’m weak!" bullshit. The dude’s got schizophrenia and agoraphobia.
Within him lies his greatest weakness and enemy- The Void. That play on two characters, with one representing great power and light, and the other representing darkness and weakness, makes for what would be a very two-dimensional character develop into a very rich and deep character instead.
He’s done some pretty amazing and momentous things, too. Back in Civil War, he awesomely escaped to the Moon, and do some awesome sulking there. In World War Hulk, he spent an awesome good amount of time watching the TV as his allies get their asses handed to them on a silver platter. And then, yeah, he went ahead and beat the shit out of the Hulk. And so far in Secret Invasion, he runs away. AWESOMELY.
I’m seeing a lot of good storylines coming out of The Sentry character, and very few of them will involve his Superman-like powers.
I have his Marvel Legends action figure, and while that figure is disappointing, it still fetches for a pretty hefty sum.
He’s one of those characters we should always look out for, this guy’s a wildcard.

The most awesome thing that Wizard Magazine has ever done was the hoax feature on the Sentry. It felt so real. The reveal article was also a fun read. Good times. As for the character himself, meh. Bendis has big plans for him though. We’ll see.
