Comic Book Reviews and Cover of the Week!
May 26, 2008My weekly stack has not increased as I’m still poor, but I will do my best to review these four titles. This week, I’m using five old school Luke Cages as the gauge of comic book awesomeness.
Again, after the reviews, we have our cover of the week. The cover of the week that means absolutely nothing except to me. Ah, such is life. 
Anyway, this week, we’re reviewin Iron Man: Director of SHIELD #29, with a four-issue replacement writer, Captain America #38, Might Avengers #14 and Amazing Spider-Man #560!
Amazing Spider-Man #560
Written by Dan Slott/ Art by Marcos Martin
First off, the cover is really nice. It’s not something that makes you go "OOH FUCK YES" but it’s pop-art and semi-old school Spidey art, so it’s a nice throwback.
Actually, the old school throwback art is present throughout the issue, and it’s very nice to see. The art gets a thumbs up from me, especially the last page. More on that later!
New villian, and the way she’s being handled, it’s so much better than the other villians BND has introduced. *cough Freak cough* Although she may seem a bit one-dimensional (snicker) because her purpose is constrained to certain individuals.
We get what we’d expect from Dan Slott- natural Spidey wit and humor, with the plot being serious without being too emo or dragging. The twist at the end of this issue is the first one that made me go "OOOOOOHHH!!!" with wideing eyes since OMD concluded. Although, the last line feels like a Joe Q "FUCK YOU INTERNET!"
Mr. Quesada gave us all the middle finger through this issue. And that alone makes this issue worthy of:
Three and a half Luke Cages out of five. It’s not a great issue, but it’s definitely very good. Pick it up.
Mighty Avengers #14

The cover is misleading, so yeah, don’t judge it by the fantastically beautifully drawn cover. Although, in its own way, it does make sense.
The first thing I noticed about this is the art- I really dig the art. I’m gonna seem like such a comic book newb, but I haven’t even heard of Khoi Pham before, and I can see I was sadly mistaken. Take all the awesome things Yu does and the cleanliness and character of Cheung’s people, and you have Pham’s art. It’s not jaw-dropping like Granov’s or Dell’otto’s, but it’s very charming.
Also, what a coincidence that I the spotlight was about Robert Reynolds, The Sentry, because he was the focus of this issue. It basically explains him and his history. I’m kinda liking how Bendis handles Sentry- the way he talks and the way he interacts with people. It’s like he’s a child, in some respects.
The issue only picks up at the end, and that doesn’t really make for such an exciting issue. It gets:
Two and a half Luke Cages out of five. You can probably skip this issue if you’re already familiar with Sentry, and just have someone tell you the ending.
Captain America #38

Okay, am I the only one who thinks this arc is getting a bit too boring? Okay, I don’t exactly think it’s boring, but I guess I was a bit disappointed. But not in the story or writing, mind you, I’m disappointed in a certain outcome that made this issue that much more awesome.
I do think, however, that the arc could be compressed a little, but I’m no Ed Brubaker so I’m sure he knows what he’s doing. For someone to fully appreciate this issue, though, you’d have to be well-versed in Captain America’s books of old, of which I am not. I did my research though, and maybe so should you if you’re as uninformed as I.
I do, however, like that the battle’s advantage swings from one team to the other. There is no clear-cut winner at this point, and with the real Cap being somewhere I can’t say without spoiling anything, this is as unpredictable as it could get.
It gets:
Four Luke Cages out of five! A screwball gets thrown into the mix. Buy it!
Iron Man #29
Written by Stuart Moore/ Art by Roberto De La Torre and our very own Carlos Pagulayan
First off, Adi Granov cover = WIN! All of these would be FANTASTIC posters all over any fan’s walls.
With the Knauf dad and son duo were doing a superb job at Iron Man: Director of SHIELD, I was a bit nervous when I found out that four issues were going to be written by someone else. Carlos Pagulayan told me himself. No, really, he did.
Fortunately, Stuart Moore did a fantastic job. You wouldn’t even notice something was amiss if you didn’t read the credits, but you would notice a difference. There’s a slight change in tone, which is good, because change is nice as it keeps us always interested.
This issue is the first of a four-part arc. For a first issue, it did its job spectacularly- it set the mood, it set the tone, it set the characters and we can only go up from here.
De la Torre and Pagulayan’s art is brilliant. I just love Iron Man art. Mix all of those elements together and you get:
