Triumph Division? Monks? What the eff?
June 7, 2008Has anyone here read Invincible Iron Man #2? This post will contain minor spoilers, but nothing to ruin the story of the issue entirely.
Before I get started, I just want to mention that Matt Fraction is still a god, and I still love how he writes. He’s one of the few people who just get it for some reason. And I love him for mentioning the Philippines.
Here’s what’s awesome- Marvel introduced a Filipino Superhero team in Invicible Iron Man #2, the Triumph Divison. These are the members:
Red Feather- the guy has a cool costume, I don’t know what he does, but is he based off a… rooster? A cock!? Well, he does have a red head.
St. George- Really…? A saint? Just because it sounds like it’s Catholic, huh?
Mighty Mother- Was that a Mother Mary reference? I somehow get a Wonder Woman vibe from her.
Anitun- The embodiment of the goddess of wind and rain. Why are all Philippine characters based off Wind? Remember Talim from Soul Calibur? “Winds, give me strength!”
Fighter One- They probably can’t think of anything anymore. The dude looks like Quick Kick from Racial Stereotypes Heaven- G.I. Joe.
The Wishing Man- A guy who, apparently, wishes for stuff.
The Great Mongoose- We don’t even have mongoose here.
So, wow, the Philippines gets a superhero team from frickin’ Marvel. Awesome stuff, right? Know what’s not awesome? They’re dead. Very very dead.
Yes, the Triumph Division’s comic book career lasted a glorious three pages.
Oh, and since did we have Bhuddist Monk terrorists here? No… seriously. No. But I do give props for the art on the Filipino citizens- very life-like. I swore the guy giving the award is Jun Jun Binay. Amazing stuff.
Even though we were made to look like we had the weakest heroes by having frail half-naked guys take em’ out, I still thank Matt Fraction for even mentioning us. Seriously, Matt, I’d kiss you if you weren’t so far and if you were into that kind of thing. Also, you have Filipino artists at Marvel, brother, ask them if we even have mongoose or monks.

Kapre, Nuno, etcetera. Most of those guys are pretty grotesque and would need some sort of back story that would have been too much work since they would die in minutes anyway.
It’s the poor research on the buddhist monks that got my goat (and then set it free, being vegetarians.)
