Movie Iron Man armor VS Extremis armor!
July 10, 2008We’ve all probably seen the Iron Man movie. I’m sure some of you have even seen it more than once. And, the way Marvel markets its movie properties is that it ties it in closely with the comic books. For example, Spider-Man’s organic webbing and for a time, costume (sort of) and Wolvie was made to sort of look like Hugh Jackman for a time.
Similarly, I’m supposing you have seen the Marvel solicits and variants thereof. We’ve noticed that the armor Iron Man uses in some of those is the one Robert Downey, Jr. wears. And no, I don’t mean Viva Las Vegas, which is a movie-tie in of sorts.
Is the movie armor really going to take over? Do we want it to take over? Comicology discusses what we’ve heard through the grapevines! MOVIE ARMOR FOR EXTREMIS ARMOR!? YAY OR NAY?!
I heard from Eric, the proprietor of the fine establishment Fourth Wall Comics, that this going to be the next canon armor after Secret Invasion. It sort of makes sense, because (SPOILER ALERT) the Skrulls did say that there was a weakness in the Extremis armor, so maybe he’d build the movie armor to get over that weakness.
This is what I love about Iron Man. He’s an ever-evolving character, and that makes him always interesting.
Unfortunately for me, I never liked it when movie properties and comic book properties meld together as a marketing tool. However, as I said earlier, Iron Man is ever-changing, so I guess it would be okay. But to be a little more concrete, let’s compare the two armors:
Extremis Armor/Movie Armor
Similarities:
Both were designed by Adi Granov
Color scheme is the same
Both kick ass
Differences:
Superman shield-shaped chest thingy against classic circular chest thingy
Extremis armor looks more modern, as it is sleeker
Extremis faceplate looks thinner and Movie faceplate looks more like a complete helmet
Less detail for Extremis armor, cleaner. Detailed like the High-G suit
Movie armor is less angled, and more rounded
I’m sure there are more, and if you have more to add, please do.
Since they are both designed by a god-like artist, Adi Granov, this might be easier to swallow.
So, yes, Comicology says YAY! MOVIE ARMOR TO BE MADE CANON, hopefully! It looks fucken’ rougher, too. How about you, dear Comicologist, what say you?! YAY OR NAY?

I prefer the Extremis to the movie armor, canon wise, so I guess thats a nay. Not that I would be upset if the movie armor is made canon though, it just wouldn’t be my pick. Heck, if I had it my way Tony would probably still be in the long pants armor from the 90’s or the classic red and gold.

The classic armors have always had a circular thing in the middle. And it doesn’t make sense that the uni-beam would come from a triangular shaped… thingy.

I’m generally opposed to a melding of movie and comic mythos, but since Tony’s a dynamic character in terms of look and functionality, it’d make sense.
The classic red and gold was never a favorite, but I loved it when he used it in a recent arc of Iron Man: Director of SHIELD, written by the Knaufs.

Nope, none at all. In fact, I don’t think they’ll make the movie armor the official 616 universe armor anymore.
They could just be keeping mum about the change, because they want to surprise everyone.
We’ll just have to see what happens after Secret Invasion.
Thanks for that last response, as upsetting as it is haha. Any idea when Secrect Invasion will finish? I know there’s the Iron Man: Viva Las Vegas where the movie armor is king and theres also the new Invicible Iron Man with the Extremis armor still ruling but I was just wondering if there is any word of anything yet?

Viva Las Vegas is being written by Jon Favreau, the director of Iron Man, with art from my favorite Iron Man artist, Adi Granov (who, incidentally, designed the movie armor) and is based on the plot and characterization of the film, which really isn’t that far off from the comics.
Invincible Iron Man is being written by Matt Fraction, with art from Salvador Larocca (sp?) if I’m not mistaken.
No word about the armor. Hopefully, Secret Invasion will be done by the end of the year. That is, if it sees no delays.

Although I know they are going with the War Machine partner and new villan so I’m not sure how much room that’ll leave for a new armor (definetly if they go with it they won’t throw in Mallen…I think.)

I say yay to the movie armor, mainly because Tony Stark’s mechanical heart thingie is originally circular. It just feels right that the armor takes its shape from the exterior.
