Are you ready?
July 21, 2008Recently, Comicology heard news of the next big thing set to come to our shores in October. And it is indeed big. You heard it here first, folks, it really is coming. The Manila Comic Con is coming.
Before any of you say anything, no, that’s not the official logo. I just made that up, because it’s so fucking HUGE, it doesn’t have a logo yet. Anyway, Comicology was able to talk to one of the organizers who chose to remain anonymous, because his awesome presence might blind us all. He talked to us about their plans for the event.
I wasn’t able to record the conversation so this post won’t be written in his exact words, but I was able to retain enough to be accurate.
So, what gives? What’s this all about? Who are these guys who want to put together a Manila Comic Convention? Anonymous-man said that there’s this group of dudes who want something more from conventions run here in the Philippines. They’re not doing it for profit. He made that extremely clear to me. Not for profit. So, why then?
He says it’s to give the fans the satisfaction they deserve with a proper convention, and to give the industry a little boost, to keep it alive and to support Filipino artists. Damn noble, yo.
When I asked him about his main purpose for putting this up, he said that he wanted to bring the culture and atmosphere of the international comic conventions- where guys can show their guts and dress up like Sailor Moon.
Since this will take place around halloween time, the theme for the event would be halloween. Even a mongoloidal five year old can figure out that the event will have fucken’ COSPLAYERS, YO! Nadia Bautista might be there as a guest. She might. No promises, okay, folks? But let’s keep our fingers crossed.

Image taken from here.
Like any other comic convention, there will be toys, statues and displays. A little hint on who anonymous-guy is, the man’s got stones the size of Silver Surfer. In fact, this event has close ties to two major collection special interest websites I frequent. And there are talks of the organizers getting in touch with a certain manufacturer. DUN DUN DUN! Yeah, I know I’m being very vague, but nothing’s set in stone yet.
And like every other good Comic Book Convention, we will have comic book signing. YES, FUCKERS, SIGNINGS! BOO-YAH! Click on the BOO for details, and the YAH for awesomeness.
Speakers? Of course, there will be speakers. Who? They don’t know yet, but they’re looking at very big names. Names so big, I cannot even mention them because of their… BIGNESS! As for hosts, they might just be someone who analyzes basketball and someone who likes drinking Royal Tru Orange. DUN DUN DUN! Just keep coming back here and the official site to get updates.
And speaking of updates, you should check back there or here to see if they’ve announced any contests or any after parties that might occur somewhere in the area afterwards. But no promises yet.
However, if all goes well, it might happen year after year. So, support it, and if it’s big enough, it’ll be an annual thing. Anonymous guy says “Support us, help us make this succeed, and we promise to come up with something new every time we launch this event.”

Interesting. I wasn’t even aware that there was another Comic Con in the works until I heard it a few minutes ago from a co-worker. And now THIS. Definitely gonna be there
@frances
The toycon was fantastic; especially if you’re a collector. I got tons of good deals. I recommend you try and make it this time, because the organizers have tons of surprises.
@sh3lly
You weren’t aware of SDCC? Under which non-geeky rock are you hiding?
But yeah, since we can’t go to SDCC, we have the next best thing. Well, not really the next best thing but the only thing we can really have. Please show your support!
Posted by comicology at July 29, 2008, 10:36 pmOf course I’m aware of the SDCC. I was referring to the MANILA Comic Con since that was what you were discussing in this post
The local comic con that I’ve always known about was the Komikon so this one’s new to me.
I’m hoping that this one might be really something big.

Oh, the Komikon, at UP, right? The Manila Comic Con, as the organizers say, will be very different from Komikon. They wanna cultivate geekery, it seems.
Posted by comicology at July 30, 2008, 1:14 amYep, that’s the one. Different from the Komikon eh? I’m all for variety and cultivating geekery. The more cons there are, the better
Exactly how will this con be different from the Komikon?
