August 25, 2008My pull list has not been getting bigger, but they were certainly good. I haven’t been writing these reviews lately, because well, I simply didn’t have the time. Now that I found some spare minutes, and some notable comic moments in the stack I just read, I thought I’d give a review.
This time around, however, I won’t be posting the cover to each one. I don’t know if this’ll be the trend. It just takes too much effort, unfortunately. What I can do, however, is link it.
For this week, perfect score would be five Venoms, like so-
Amazing Spider-Man #567

Yeah, it wasn’t bad. It wasn’t great either. It was a conclusion issue, which felt like a really long epilogue actually. And I’m not so sold on this new Kraven. She’s “meh” so far. Here’s what sucked the life out of the issue for me- Daredevil appears on the cover, but Daredevil doesn’t even show up in the issue at all. Yeah, sure, it’s logical, but still, I wanted to see me some DD.
This storyline, although it is very reminiscent of Kraven’s Last Hunt, which was phenominal, is very forgettable. People won’t be talking about this one in a few years. Hell, who am I kidding- no one’s talking about it now. New Ways to Die is all the buzz.

Amazing Spider-Man #568 New Ways to Die

Ah. What I loved about Spider-Man is back, albeit in a different fashion because of the BND happenings. I have so much love for this issue, and I have high hopes for the rest of the storyline.
The campiness and cheesiness of the writing has taken a backseat, hopefully for good. Spidey’s being thrust back into the main 616 universe after being isolated for so long in his own book. Eddie Brock is back, and from the look of things, Venom will be, too. I guess that means, by extension, Scorpion, too, right?
Just a couple things I don’t like so much- the fact that Mr. Negative is friends with Daredevil. I mean, isn’t his whole super power thing to just know things around him? So, what’s up with that? Oh, and John Romita, Jr.’s art. I never really liked it.
At the end of the Spidey story (and a nice cliffhanger ending at that), there the Adi “godlike” Granov rendered story for Venom. And the way it was written was just fantastic. It literally sent a chill down my spine and directly into my penis, to cause a geek erection. This story alone is worth the $3.99!
FIVE OUT OF FIVE VENOMS! Seven, if you count the two inside the comic. Sorry, I phail at comedy.
Immortal Iron Fist: The Origin of Danny Rand

Art by: Kano, Gil Kane, and Larry Hama
It reads like a really really old comic. Maybe because they’re based of really old stories of Iron Fist. The campiness actually turned me off from it, as I was expecting a Fractiontastic rendition of Danny Rand’Kai again, and similar to what he’d been doing on Thor.
If you’re a big fan of the old comics, drawn in a fairly contemporary manner, then by all means, pick this up. If you were itching for a fantastic redefining of Danny’s origins, then best to stay away. This felt lukewarm for me.
The art is okay. It’s not bad in the sense that it’s pretty good, I’m just not a fan of it.

Captain America #34

And now, it has gotten thicker, and the pace got a little quicker. This is where SHIT GETS EXCITING! It’s such a fantastic issue, I don’t want to give away too much. But rest assured that a lot happens, and the revelations don’t seem to wanna end.
For a book on which my main complaint was the slow pacing, this issue felt like taking a dump after holding it in for a few hours because you were stuck in rush hour traffic. Epic proportions of badassery ensue and I assure you, the next few issues will be all out slobberknockers.
