Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 Costume Changes

Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2: Fusion is the much awaited sequel to the widely popular Marvel Ultimate Alliance, which had a port on the PS2, Xbox, 360, PS3 and PSP. MUA 2 comes out in all current gen consoles and handhelds, but not for the PC, apparently and that makes me a terribly sad panda. Regardless of the fact that I still don’t have a 360 (well, not yet), I am incredibly excited for this game. And really, I would get a 360 just for this game alone.

Besides being the massively graphically updated sequel to my favorite Marvel video game of all time, MUA 2 gives gamers (myself especially) a whole slew of other reasons to get excited over it. For starters, it’s based off one of the more successful and controversial storylines in recent Marvel publication history- Civil War. Because of this alone, both purists and casual fans who appreciate the source material were immediately drawn in.

Their website is fantastic. The marketing is fantastic. Their strategy of revealing one new character at a time makes fans drool with anticipation, hoping that their favorite character would be revealed next. And the graphics, I just can’t say enough good things about the graphics. Well, except… hold on a minute here. There are costume changes?! WTF?!

One of the biggest reasons I loved the original MUA was because it was like a comic book come to life. These characters were iconic, and they looked the way they looked in the comics. I see no reason why that has to change. These costume changes are unnecessary. For a game to closely follow a comic book storyline, but deviate in the design of the costumes, especially for a few notable ones, it just doesn’t add up.

For starters, look at Daredevil’s costume. What was wrong with having his billy clubs on just one side? And add all that shit around him? This isn’t so bad, I guess. It’s just a bit jarring and it takes some getting used to. Iron Fist, on the other hand, he was totally changed.

I love Iron FIst’s latest costume, with the hand warp. Why not just use that? What the fuck is that baseball catcher chest pad thing doing there? No, really, what is it doing there? Iron Fist used to go bare chested with that douchebaggy popped up collar to the extreme. That is messed up shit.

Deadpool looks quite cool here, but they made changes that made me think this should be the comic costume. But it isn’t. And I still prefer it if the game stays completely faithful to comic book look. I want to see his cuffs, red gloves and red boots.

Juggernaut underwent a complete transformation, which really looks like an armor upgrade. What? He got Cytorak to give him new duds? He’s still got that bulky helmet but nowhere near as ridiculous as his comic book costume, which fits him well enough. Come on, developer guys, what gives?

Wolverine now has a collar. What the hell, guys?! A collar on Wolverine!? WHY!? And what the fuck is up with those Nike looking gloves and boots? Wolverine has such a simple and feral look. Please keep it that way.

Now, there are characters with very, very iconic looks and they really shouldn’t be changed because, quite frankly, they don’t need to be. And they certainly don’t need to look like Tobias.

I’m glad they retained Spider-Man’s costume with no change that I can tell, and that Iron Man’s costume looks to be the Extremis armor. I’m happy the FF get good, classic costumes. But seriously, why the need for change? If it aint broke, don’t fix it, dev team guys.

With the amount of effort put into redesigning the costumes, and the high poly character designs, my biggest fear is that there is no costume selection and that we are stuck with their redesigns. That makes me a sad panda.

Obviously, that’s exactly what they’re doing. But I do not like it one bit, no siree! I don’t think there was anything wrong with the costume design of the characters from before. They better have the costumes in there as alternates.

better graphics means more realism. so i guess the direction they took with the game is to design the costumes as if they were real. sort of a balance between a movie design and a classic comic design. batman also got the same treatment in his arkham game and that turned out pretty good as seeing super high definition spandex isn’t as cool as seeing super high definition leather.

as far as your points though, wolvie has to look the most retarded. i can live with pretty much everyone else’s designs.

I agree with the high definition bit. I don’t like any movie design costume so any mix with any comic design puts a bad taste in my mouth.

I understand that they’re trying to make the suits more realistic and more functional, but the one thing that I loved in the first game was how comic accurate everything was.
