A Whole Lot of Shit Is Happening

July 20, 2009

So, a whole lot of shit is happening everywhere. Let’s go through them really quick. Some of them are quite exciting, one is dreadful news (sort of) and some shit that I can’t really understand just yet. Let’s go.

http://img12.imageshack.us/img12/1738/bannermds.jpg

These things, they aren’t exactly news. They’ve been around for about a week or more now; all I’m trying to do is to make sense of it all. Why? Because I like to think my opinion matters.

First things first.

ScarJo as Black Widow

http://img31.imageshack.us/img31/1262/blackwidowj.jpg

I learned not to jump the gun after Heath Ledger pulled off the now definitive portrayal of the clown prince of crime.  However, I will admit it, I was extremely skeptical of this casting choice. I felt that she wasn’t athletic enough, and that she didn’t look hardened enough. Then again, Black Widow was a spy, not a brutal force. Part of her arsenal was her allure and ability to seduce men into stuttering idiots. And Ms. Scarlett Johansson, in that pose, in that outfit, has certainly turned me into a stuttering idiot.

The look is great, and very comic accurate, with those stinger braces. Unfortunately, the photo makes it difficult to see if she’s got the belt or not. I hope she does, even if it isn’t as pronounced. This doesn’t show the belt, as well.

You know, kinda like this.

Despite the rumors going around of some sort of an altercation between ScarJo and Gwyneth, I am hoping for the best here. She’s sweet sultry, and not whorish at all. I like it. We’ll see how she does in a fight. *prays for a good stunt double* Oh, and the accent better be spot on or it’ll take a lot of fan boy defending for that to make sense.

Principal photography for Iron Man has ended ahead of schedule at 71 days. Let’s hope she’s a match for…

Natalie Portman as Jane Foster

Natalie Portman is an amazing actress. She isn’t one of those ditzy blonde pretty girls who can’t act and there are a bajillion of those in Hollywood right now. Hell, remove “blonde” and you’ll have a bajillion of those in Philippine cinema, too. But Ms. Portman, she’s different. She’s a seasoned, learned actress. Sure, Thor is an comic book flick, but so was V for Vendetta.

I wholeheartedly approve! Yay for good casting! You know, like Ryan Reynolds for Deadpool, or even if he was cast as Flash. Oh, wait…

Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan, the Green Lantern

http://img23.imageshack.us/img23/8085/ryanreynolds97.jpg

Okay, stop distracting me with your hot, toned abs, Mr. Reynolds. No, really, stop it. It’s very distracting.

Who was the genius who decided this? Hal is a typical air force jock with an unwavering sense of right and justice. He’s a hard ass who does not give up hope and fightsfor what he truly believes in. Reynolds’ characters tend to be wise cracking tough guys (Wade and that character in Blade) or chick flick dudes (virtually every other character). But yeah, no judgements here. He may pull it off, or it may bomb so badly that the chances of him being cast as the guys he would be 100% perfect to play and create epic masterpieces (ala RDJ for Tony Stark) are shot to shit.

Who here would love to see Reynolds as Flash? I sure as hell would. I’d plop down some money for the price of admission, the DVD, and the video game. Same goes for Deadpool. Reynolds already did the swordsplay training and we know he can be perfect for the part. We know it! Gah! I’m nervous for Green Lantern and the future of Flash and Deadpool. Oh, speaking of future…

DC Loses Superman License in 2013?

The reports say that DC will lose the license their most iconic, if not the most iconic comic book character of all time, come to 2013. Said right are to revert to the estates of the creators, Shuster and Siegel. I like that the creators are getting what’s due to them, even though it’s far too late, yeah?

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/3674/4497129414441e37eac5b15.jpg

However, I think the estate only gets the name- Superman, and maybe Clark Kent, I’m not entirely sure and the look of the Superman of Action Comics, which bares little resemblance to the current Man of Steel. Still, costumes can change, but it’s really the name that defines a character.

The stories, the S shield, Lex Luthor, Kryptonite, additional powers, rogues gallery will all remain with DC, though. So, really, Supes is going to be a name and an outdated costume.

What will DC do with him gone though? He’s probably the only character who has been in all major plotlines, and was a driving force in most of them. How do you just remove him? Erase him from existence? Pull a Joe Quesada?

Will DC pay the estates a pretty penny just so they can keep using their most important character? What if the estate gets a better deal somewhere (MARVEL?!) Holy shit! Sentry VS Superman anybody?

HOLY SHIT! Seriously, HOLY SHIT! Can you imagine me saying “HOLY SHIT?” Well, it’s sort of like the you, going HOLY SHIT after seeing that. Just like that, only geekier. And angrier.

It’s going to be interesting to see how DC handles this. They’ll probably do a lot of legal juggling to keep the character while paying the least amount of money, but let’s hope the creators’ families get some justice and a nice slice of the pie. And speaking of shelling out money…

G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra Action Figures are plentiful and expensive, but awesome

It is a very good time to be a G.I. Joe fan. Actually, wait, scratch that. It’s a good time to be Hasbro right now. G.I. Joes are rising in price and after the release of Transformers which was a blockbuster hit, these guys must be rolling in money. And soon, they’ll be rolling in yours, if you happen to be an avid Joe collector.

Even if you’re not a fan of the character designs, there’s one thing I know a Joe collector can’t live without- vehicles and armaments. They have tons of new vehicles, play sets and great looking weapons in the single carded figures. Oh, and they cost an arm, a leg and both testicles.

http://img194.imageshack.us/img194/5295/gijoemobilecommandtoy.jpg

The Pit, comes with General Hawk, and it costs five grand. Oh, but it’s huge and heavy. If you’re a Joe collector, go down to the closest TRU or TK before you run out of overpriced goods. You know the good shit won’t last for very long and they’ll die out. Kinda like…

Blackest Night RULES THE WORLD!

http://img13.imageshack.us/img13/3121/75537992.jpg

It starts out slow. It even bored me and I got sleepy. Then, it just creeps up on you, and then all of a sudden, it PUNCHES YOU IN THE TEETH! MULTIPLE TIMES! If, by the end of this comic, you don’t go “HOLY SHIT!,” then you are no longer allowed to read this blog.

If you buy your copy from Comic Odyssey (dunno about the other comic book shops), you get a Black Lantern ring. Hell, that alone should be worth the purchase. Fucking Black Lantern RING! Is there anything else I could possibly want?! Oh yeah…

SDCC Goodies

We’re so damn close to the San Diego Comic Con. So fucking close. Announcements and announcements galore that will make our collective geek pants get creamed!

The grayscale SDCC exclusive Captain America? Thank you, Playkit. Thank you. They brought it here. They retail at P1200 at Toy Kingdom. Go get them now, they’ll be gone soon.
