Pixar-Marvel Ant Man? Could it be?

September 6, 2009

All this craziness between Disney and Marvel and all the speculations has really put a bad taste in my mouth. I, for one, am optimistically skeptical. I am very uneasy about the deal, but I don’t want to jump to any conclusions. I am hoping for the best, where Disney feeds Marvel money for a better marketing reach and higher returns but keeps their grubby paws away. However, should there be a Jonas Brothers meets The New Avengers comic book, I will embrace Dark Horse and DC and IDW and try to forget Marvel ever existed.

It also doesn’t help that the Disney-Marvel deal has a $140 million termination fee. This means that if the deal doesn’t push through, Marvel has to pony up $140 million smackers to Disney. I know they got the money, but are they liquid enough to do this? Maybe, but Marvel has already said they have no intentions of backing out of the deal. The House of Mouse and the House of Ideas are going through with this marriage.

However, today, I read the first good news that this merger has sired.

I found this article up on comicbookmovie, which they found on Entertainment Weekly. CBM writer said they found in on page 23:

Marvel has thousands of characters to feed Disney’s film, TV, and animation business (Pixar is said to already be eyeballing an Ant-Man movie). As Iron Man proved, they don’t need to be iconic to become blockbusters.

First of all, I disagree. Iron Man was not as non-iconic as most people though. He had a solid comic book following. He was a founding member of the Avengers, for crying out loud. I also believe in my geek heart that Tony Stark inspired Black Sabbath’s iconic song of the same name. (citation needed)

But you know, this is right up Pixar’s alley. They love modelling small stuff into big stuff. You’ve got Toy Story, Toy Story 2, A Bug’s Life, and a ton of other Pixar movies that I’ve probably forgotten.

For sure, they’ll do a Scott Lang movie, because it has the elements of a good Pixar movie. My fear here is that they could name the character Hank Pym, use Hank’s origins but do the story  of Scott Lang. Pym’s name is probably a little bit more recognizable as he is a founding Avenger and the origin would be easier to explain.

Lang was a criminal who was reformed by Pym and Stark. Right from the get-go, there’s a story of redemption. As for the heart-tugging element, Lang did it to save his daughter, Cassie. You might know her as Stature, who was once seriously ill. From villainy to heroism, a recipe for success, Pixar style. He even goes from second rate hero to full blown hero, as he dies in Avengers #500, only to be replaced by his daughter, to carry on the mantle.

Cassie Lang, aka Freaky Android Love Maker

Go ahead, think about it. All of that story, in glorious, lovable Pixar 3D. I can hear hearts being tugged on already.

They could also go down the more comedic route of Eric O’Grady, being the bad guy with a super hero status who does an Eddie Guerrero- lies, cheats and steals. Being small does have its advantages, especially if you’re into that whole voyeurism thing. He becomes the reluctant hero now and again, and then eventually has a change of heart and decides to be a good guy. With Pixar’s knack for comedic spots, this could be a winner, yes?

Either way, if this pulls through, depeding on how it turns out, we will see if the merger just cost us our childhood heroes.

Wait, if Pixar does an Ant-Man movie, what happens to his place in the Avengers movie then?

I’m thinking they do a Hank Pym in the Avengers and a Scott Lang or an Eric O’Grady in the Pixar one.
