Comic of the Week- Exodus #1
September 16, 2009Hey geeks. I’m trying out this comic of the week thing and see how it picks up. I used to do weekly reviews but that got tiresome and were actually the least popular posts. This time, I’m just going to pick out one title from all that came out the previous release and geek out about it. Yeah, this is pretty late, but I’ve been busy so bear with me here.
This week, I’m going to talk about what could possibly be my favorite issue that came out of the whole Dark Reign thing and possibly my favorite X-men related thing for the entire year of 2009.

Exodus #1
Written By: Matt Fraction
Art By: Mike Deodato and Terry Dodson
If you’re a Cyclops fan, this issue is for you. In Exodus #1, not only do you see how Cyclops’ plan falls flawlessly into place (defeating a vastly superior team, getting a haven for mutants) but he also does it with such a commanding precense, your Cyclops-loving boner gets hard for his general for mutant affairs status.
The story is generally the culmination of all the deception, all the trickery and all the betreyal that Cyclops let loose into the world, like unravelling a beautiful tapestry by a single thread. Norman was tricked, and that doesn’t sit well with the Goblin so he declares war, just like Cyke anticipated. Norman brings in the Avengers and the Dark X-Men, just like Cyke thought he would. It was like Cyclops used a “predict all moves” cheat on chess. I loved it because it showcases Cyclops’ true abilities and powers- his vision, not his Optic Blasts (though that could’ve been made to look more powerful.)
The battles were epic, too. But yeah, they were a little too incomplete and inconclusive to a fault, which makes my geek alarms go off. We see Wolverine gutting Omega in one page then the next panels with those two, they’re still battling it out. We’re treated to a Bullseye/Archangel fight, but the actual fight happens off panel. It’s a fight that would have seen Archangel slashing Bullseye’s fucken’ head off, but no, we never really get to know what happened.

Ares jobbed, too. I mean, he’s the motherfucking God of War, shouldn’t he have proven to be more than a match to a Valkyrie or someone with Valkyrie powers? That’s like the Undertaker cleanly job to Hornswoggle at Wrestlemania. There should’ve been more to it than that.
Cyclops also went down too easily. I mean, he’s the mutant general, doesn’t he have a security detail? And why are his Optic Blasts so weak? OR it was all according to plan? Either way, it all worked out for Cyclops in the end, with Norman’s team falling back and the media on the mutants’ side.

Best Line:
Cyclops to Norman “Guess who’s off the genius board.” BOOYAH!! You tell him, Scotty!

4 and a half Jim Lee Cyclopses out of 5! Great story, great art, great action if not a little confusing. Buy it, guys!
