BROMANCE: Superman/Batman Public Enemies
October 9, 2009Before we get on with it, I just want to say I’m sorry that I haven’t been updating as much as I want to because of the new job. Yes, I do like it, and yes I am learning a lot but it eats up a lot of time. It’s just that I get a little guilty not being able to update Comicology as much. Oh, and before we head on over to the rest of the entry, I would like to extend my congratulations to Bearbrick Love for kick our ass and winning the Philippine Blog Awards Hobbies and Recreation Category.
Anyway, let’s get on with the meat. Some time ago, Superman/Batman: Public Enemies came out (of the closet), and I was able to get my grubby little hands on a copy. Here’s my review. Man to man loving was never so muscular. BOW CHIKA BOW WOW!
Okay, it isn’t THAT gay, but you’d be surprised the amount of manlove this DVD has, and by the same token, the comic series, too. This DVD was (loosely) based on, if I’m not mistaken, Superman/Batman #1-6, written by Jeph Loeb (relation to Lisa Loeb unknown, but unlikely) and penciled by Ed McGuinness.
I like McGuinness’ art because of the exaggerated cartoony, comic-y characters he renders, and the feel of the entire DVD was set to his art, though some frames seemed closer than others. I still liked it, especially will all the freakishly roided up characters.

The animation is solid, too. Fights were animated well, but it kind of felt more like an episode of Justice League Unlimited than it did a DTV movie. While the action sequences made you really feel how powerful Supes’ punches were and how incredibly indestructible Bats was, it still wasn’t as good in that department as Green Lantern: First Flight or even G.I. Joe Resolute. Thankfully, it’s more than just a popcorn movie.

Voice acting was surprisingly flat for Kevin Conroy, the ultimate Batman voice actor, but it was still pretty good. Tim Daly and Clancy Brown picked up the slack though, giving Supes’ and Lex vibrant voices. Everyone else did good, too, maybe except for the new Toyman.

As for the story, well, you can’t really fault this for anything. Except for the mecha Superman/Batman, which was included in the comics, if I’m not mistaken, everything seemed to make sense. Of course, they’d take some liberties on the comics to put in or take out scenes that would translate better to film. That’s okay, and sometimes, that’s even welcome most of the time with the sole exception of giant squid-related endings.
Tell me that’s not cool.
Two things they took directly from the comics
Superman/Batman: Public Enemies is a great flick, without a dull moment, with good action and good storytelling to boot. I give this 3.5 out of 5 Superman Batman wedding rings.
