Comic of the Week: Dark Avengers Annual #1

Since last week was hectic as all fuck, I wasn’t able to post anything at all. That means I wasn’t able to put up my comic of the week. This week, I’ve got a special treat for myself (since I know most of you guys don’t give a fuck about the weekly comic thing), I plan to do two.

I wanted to take a quick peek at Dark Avengers Annual #1 for two good reasons- Noh-Varr and Chris Bachalo.

I enjoyed this issue because it attempted to humanize an alien and succeeded. This is the first time I actually liked Noh-Varr, because back then, to me, his character was pretty one dimensional and cookie-cutter for would-be Kree protector/invaders. At least now, he’s given an internal struggle. An alien trying to find his human side, I like it. Sure, it’s been done. Hell, it’s been done by the big guy himself, Superman, but I guess that’s what made him interesting.

I liked the idea of a once arrogant yet noble motherfucker try and find his place in the world. And the good thing about it is that he did it without any Bendispeak. At least, none that I could clearly identify as Bendispeak, which Spider-Woman was rank with.

Another great thing about this issue, as with any issue pencilled by Chris Bachalo, is the art and the flow from panel to panel. Chris Bachalo knows his shit. Apparently, Bachalo draws a cool Sentry.

I just don’t like the new costume very much. Okay, I don’t like the new costume at fucking all. Look at that thing! It’s monochromatic bug guy.

The issue, because of the great art and good Bendispeak-free writing, gets a four out of five original Captain Mar-Vell.

It didn’t score higher because the new costume really blows and I was kind of hoping how Sentry kicks Noh’s ass from here to Quiapo and back. Seriously, who can’t beat Sentry? Everyone has beaten Sentry!
