The event that a lot of fans have been waiting for is finally here. Whether you loved or hated Dark Reign (and you’re a fool if you didn’t like it), its backlash, Siege, has been built up to be the can of kick ass that finally puts things back in order in Marvel Universe. I, for one, am kinda sad that the status quo might become too normal again, but with Siege, I’m just going to enjoy the geekfest while it lasts.

The House of M tandem of Bendis and Copiel’s ultimate 2010 kick off event promises the first time the Avenger’s Big 3 fight alongside each other again since Disassembled. It’s funny since Bendis was the one who took them apart in the first place, but this is the ultimate fan wank post-Disassembled so thank you, Mr. Bendis, sir.

Oh and on a sidenote, I’m happy there has been less Bendispeak lately in all his titles.

Before I get to the story and the issue itself, I just want to say that one of the many things that pisses me off about Siege and Marvel, in general, the past few months is the timing of releases. Siege apparently takes place after Thor #606, which doesn’t come out until Jan. 27, 2010. I was all “WTF when did Asgard go back to the US? Wasn’t it in fucking Latveria?” Oh yeah, spoilers. Captain America: Reborn was also pre-empted by a lot of other titles. Hell, “Who Will Weild The Shield” came out before Reborn even finished, and it’s still one issue away. Yeah, Reborn’s a cop-out anyway.

Finding it in myself to forgive Marvel for the timing in releases and just putting the stories together in my mind (although through Siege #1, they’ve totally spoiled Iron Man, Captain America and Thor), I think this issue is still amazingly good. Not perfect though.

One reason why I can’t seem to get a sense of significance for the incident which sparked the whole shebag is because it was shown to happen, but people didn’t seem to react so much. I mean, before Civil War, people went balistic because people died. Now, a whole fucken’ stadium got thrashed and it was still a meta-human act, but it seems people aren’t batting an eyelash. I hope this thing ties into the story somehow down the line.

Oh, and told ya so! Iron Man was totally right. PRO-REG FOR LIFE!

Disregarding that crap about no one giving a shit about the death of 8000 people, this has seriously piqued my interest. Norman is coming unhinged and Thor is kicking some fucking ass in a big way, going up against Sentry! This is a great first issue. It sets the mood and you feel like the shit is about to hit the fan. If the pacing doesn’t slow down just a tad, it could be disastrous, though.

On the art side of things, all I can say is that Copiel is a god at drawing Thor. I don’t know if that’s a pun, but if it is, it is totally unintentional. I loved House of M art. I fucking adored it. The kickassery was there. The big feel of each panel was there. He essentially did the same thing for Thor. In Siege, it’s honestly no different. It’s magnificent.

Disregarding Marvel’s timing fuck-up, I’d say Siege #1 is damn good issue if you’re able to put the pieces together. You shouldn’t have to do that, of course, but you can’t really take that against the issue as a single release. It gets 4 out of 5 Mjolnirs.
