Okay, I don’t know who to credit this to because there are none mentioned within the issue. So I guess credit goes to whoever made this comic.
So, what’s inside? If you can understand FIlipino, I guess you can surmise that it is Manny Villar’s life story. If that’s what you thought, then you are somewhat right. I don’t know his life story exactly so I’m not sure how historically valid this is, but then again, they did call it an alamat, or a Fairy Tale in English. It could be completely fictional, from start to end, if that’s the direction they decided to take.
The plot is for kids with very short attention spans as it is divided into two-page spread stories. Each story is supposedly some milestone in Manny’s childhood. It starts out as him as a kid, selling Japanese-looking shrimp in some market, and ends up kicking some bully’s ass. Then he goes all Santa on some kid and makes him a toy, made out of garbage. I guess violence and craftmanship sove everything!
It also covers his entrance into UP Diliman, which is The Philippines’ premiere university (next to De La Salle University, of course). After college, he finds a chick and eats corned beef. Also, apparently, after graduating from the country’s 2nd most prestigious university, he lands a job as a construction contractor. I am assuming here, but this is probably where Camella homes comes from.
The art is animé-y. This is no secret, and I never hide it - I fucking hate animé-style drawing, especially like this. I hate the overtly Japanese expressions on a supposedly super-Pinoy. A Filipino candidate being drawn as a Japanese character just doesn’t hit the right buttons, you know?
I know this is a free comic book and all, but I could’ve used some color. I mean, some color would’ve made the poorness much poorer, with gritty grit and dirty dirt. It would’ve put the point across more. The only pages with color are the front and back covers.
