Planet Hulk: Smash?

Planet Hulk is the direct to DVD adaptaion of Greg Pak and Carlos Pagulayan’s Planet Hulk storyline. The storyline defined who Hulk would be for the next year or so after its release; and a lot of people loved the way G. Pak handled the Hulk. Did the animated movie do justice to the original story, or maybe surpass it? Unfortunately, the long and short of it is that it almost feels like a hurried synopsis rather than a full adaptaion. Let’s break it down into its components.

Story

The basic outline of the story’s there- Illuminati guys ship Hulkie into outer space, Hulk fights for life, Hulk gets captured, Hulk fights for freedom, and becomes king. It’s all there, but some key elements and juicy bits of the storyline in the comics felt rushed or just weren’t there in the movie. I do, however, understand that it is almost impossible to fit any written story into a good 1.5 movie. To achieve that, the movie took some liberties. It is accurate to say that the essence stays the same, though.

That said, I felt that the presentation of the basic story would work well to someone who didn’t read Planet Hulk or a casual Hulk fan. The only reason it felt off to me was because I was able to digest the comic book TPB. So it’s kinda like showing me the buffet but only giving me a sampler platter. It does serve its purpose, though. The way it was told was surprisingly efficient, though the core focus was on the smashing, the ass kicking and the name taking.

You end up hating who you’re supposed to hate and sympathizing with those you’re supposed to sympathize. Because the original storyline did away with the one thing that I find most interesting about Hulk - Bruce Banner - the movie, too, shows old Hulkie as this two-dimensional dude who apparently likes to beat shit up. Hell, he doesn’t even have that inner man vs. self conflict that I like. The supporting cast makes up for it, though.

This is a popcorn movie. It will not throw you into heavy thought, nor will it envoke complex emotions in you. It is simply meant to be enjoyed for the action, kinda like Green Lantern: First Flight but more screaming and smashing.

Animation

Neither DC nor Marvel has come up with stellar, ground-breaking direct-to-DVD animation so far. I would say that the most visually interesting animated movie has got to be Justice League: New Frontier, but even then, it wasn’t technically moving. For Planet Hulk’s purposes, though, the simplified animation style does the job. It isn’t like Carlos Pagulayan’s masterful rendering of muscular monsters in the comic, but everything is translated well.

Since the focus is the movement and the fighting, the almost-animé (yech) style of drawing works. Almost. I would’ve liked a darker, more Western style, because the story is already simple. Giving the style some complexity would’ve probably helped the simple storytelling.

The fights were supposed to be brutal and were supposed to give you this adrenaline rush, the likes of which you’ve never seen before. Unfortunately, I’ve seen some better action scenes on Justice League Unlimited. Take, for example, Superman VS Darkseid in the episode “Destroyer.” The only fight I really enjoyed watching was Hulk VS Beta Ray Bill. Oh yeah, he took Silver Surfer’s place because Surfie’s under license to 20th Century Fox or something like that.

Voice Acting

The voice acting, almost surprisingly, was fantastic. Everyone from Rick Wasserman as Hulk to Liam O’brien as Hiroim to Sam Vincent as Miek was spot-on terrific.

Instead of getting actors, like the Wonder Woman DVD did, Planet Hulk employed some really good voice actors. I think, this way, instead of picturing the actor, whose voice is just as recognizable as the personality himself, the character kinda comes alive. I sort of regret knowing what Steve Blum looks like, and how he looks when he does VO’s. Now, when I watch Wolverine in action, I kinda picture Steve.

When Hulk lets out this guttural roars, it feels so visceral. But yes, it does get old after hearing it over and over in the first 12 minutes of the movie. Then again, what would you expect out of a movie about Hulk? Little dialogue as possible, but with lots and lots of shouting, grunting and groaning. In fact, if you play the fight scenes then close your eyes or switch out of your media player, it sounds like you opened a really violent hardcore man-to-man-to-woman-to-creature porn flick.

Soundtrack

I had to open the movie again, just so I could re-listen to the soundtrack. Thing is, if it didn’t have a lasting effect the first time, it probably failed to do what it was supposed to do. Most of it was just big orchastra pieces, all gladiator-y. I guess I wouldn’t have it any other way. It’d suck to have some heavy metal in there for fight scenes; it would’ve felt too forced, manufactured and not to mention effin’ cheesy. Still, the soundtrack could’ve been a litlte more memorable.

The only music that I can say really captured the moment would be when Caiera was holding a child, right before the bomb dropped. Final fight scene’s mood wasn’t enhanced by the music either. Not by much, at least.

Favorite Bits

I would have the say that the fight with Beta Ray Bill is the best part of the movie, by far. It was just so awesome seeing Beta Ray getting some love. Plus, it was the best fight scene in the movie, and Beta Ray Bill’s dialogue was just so kick ass.

“I act by the will of others, Hulk. The disc in my chest and in yours demand that one of us must die. You have my sympathy, because IT. WILL. NOT. BE. ME!”

Fucken’ hardcore.

Final Verdict

This was definitely not Marvel’s best animted DVD. I enjoyed Hulk VS Wolverine/Thor so much more.
