Comic of the Week: Uncanny X-Men #521
February 25, 2010Uncanny X-Men has been getting some flack from a ton of people lately, especially because of Land’s art and because Fraction’s writing on it isn’t as stellar as it is expected to be. I personally disagree with the latter reason to a certain degree, but of course, everyone’s entitled to their own misguided opinions.
Everyone kinda changed their tone, however, with Uncanny X-Men #521.

The issue leading up to UXM#521 wasn’t spectacular by any means, but it was entertaining in a Fraction-esque way, which is already a step above a lot of other titles. I actually like almost everything about this issue. I know Greg “Pornface” Land has been caught tracing his work, but you can’t deny that his internal art still looks good. A tad unethical, and probably fucking illegal, but still looks good.
Well, most of the time anyway.
The flow of the story was good - action packed, but simultaneously, it drove the story forward. Way forward. Sure, the way the big fight scene ended felt a bit disappointing, but it is far from a cop out. The action sequences were greatly helped by the most awesome Fantomex, who is slowly becoming a real favorite of mine. Something about that costume just makes him seem so bad assed. At the risk of sounding racist, white is the new black.

While the main plot was unfolding, two more subplots were running in parallel- the baddies with the gas and the pillar construction. I’m actually quite curious as to what’ll be of Nation X. Am I the only one here hoping it becomes a staple thing? Fuck the X-Mansion and fuck Genosha. Let’s keep the island.
Oh, and Magneto - I am intruiged with Magneto. What’s his deal? What’s up his sleeve? This is the kind of issue, quite honestly, that will keep me asking for more. That, my friends, is a comic book issue done well.
Land’s art, as always, is full of porn and pornfaces.
Is it just me or does Wolverine look like he’s raping that girl in the tanktop? Because, he seriously looks like he is!
What really made this issue special was the ending. I actually tried thinking of a way for that particular event to happen. What would cause that to come to fruition? If this is the way they decide to do it, then I’ll be interested to see how it pans out. The very last panel will make you guys cream your pants.
The ending alone merits a 5 out of 5, but a comic book is not just the ending. The issue gets a 4 out of 5 silver bullets in front of the Breakworld storyline poster. Also, see? I can make a CotW without spoilers.
