Iron Man 2 Toy Launch Haul

March 8, 2010

Launched this morning, the Iron Man 2 toy line set the Megamall Basement Activity center abuzz with geekgasms and willingness to spend. The crowd was really excited for the new toyline and almost everyone was happy to give away their hard earned money in exchange for small plastic figures. The event itself wasn’t much at first, but it everyone who attended didn’t seem to mind, and it did pick up eventually. Everyone was there for the Iron Man toys anyway.

I ran into Slangards and Martin there. Good to see those guys again.

Like a dumb motherfucker, I didn’t bring a camera. I totally regret that decision, especially when the most hardcore group of cosplayers graced us with their awe inspiring presence. I want to spread my legs as wide as I can and punch my testicles as hard as humanly possible.

http://img687.imageshack.us/img687/8065/armory4.jpg

The cosplay group had Mark IV Iron Man with light-up eyes, a War Machine with a gatling gun that fucking SPINS! Oh, and a Hulk Buster. Yes, a HULK BUSTER! As expected, there were more grown-ups than kids. In fact, I saw some dude push a kid away for a photo-op.

Items launched include 3.75″ figures, the new 10″ Mark VI’s (Mark V seems to be the War Machine), 8″ War Marchine and Mark VI Iron Man figures, Iron Man masks (one is a simple mask and the other has voice) and some old stock Marvel Universe toys. The Hammer Files MU’s were nowhere to be found.

The 8″ War Machines were fucking HOARDED! I saw this MOTHERFUCKER who had a basket FULL of them. Whoever you are, you little shitfaced motherfucker hoarder, I hope a second shipping comes in and your hoarded 8″ figures become WORTHLESS and you’re left with overstocked CRAP, you MOTHERLESS CUNT!!!  GAH!

http://img706.imageshack.us/img706/8751/armory3.jpg

Before I go on to describe my haul, here’s some good news for you collectors out there - Marvel Universe toys have been marked down. From P549.75 or something they are now P449.75! That’s P100 less!

I haven’t unboxed these newly bought babies because I want a good photographer with me when I do. Here’s my haul.

http://img408.imageshack.us/img408/4835/marki.jpg
Mark I

From what I can see through the packaging, which is quite good because you can see the figure, its accessories and the cards clearly and with little obstruction, it’s got the best paint apps in the series. Why? Because the Mark I is supposed to be dirty. Almost all the figures have horrid paint apps, and you really have to be careful when you pick out your figs.

It comes with a missle launcher that should resemble a flame thrower, three cards and a stand.

They were abundant.

http://img716.imageshack.us/img716/7166/markii.jpg
Mark II

I’ve always liked how this armor looks; it seems so beefy and industrial. This is what a real man of Iron would look like - not red and gold, right? Anyway, the paint apps on this thing aren’t as bad as the other figures, but it’s still a shame to see a lot of paint bleeding and smudges here and there. I guess you can’t expect much from a small figure.

It comes with a missle launcher, three cards and a stand. And there were tons of these left in the stands.

http://img69.imageshack.us/img69/6107/markiii.jpg
Mark III

This thing comes with a shirt or something. It looks retarded. And also a stand and three cards, like all the other figures.

Paint seems to be the largest problem with these figures. It almost seems as if the poor Chinese boy painting these figures was being anally violated at the same time.

If the price drop means we’ll be getting increasingly crappier figures, I’d rather pay full price. There are a ton of smudges and bleeding on a lot of the figs. I had to replace my Mark III maybe three times before I found one that I was satisfied with. Good thing there’s a lot of them.

http://img695.imageshack.us/img695/5868/markiv.jpg
Mark IV

This little fucker is shortpacked! I had to get a number to wait for these things. Good thing we found a few in the pegs. They were really shortpacked though. So, the Mark IV is essentially the new armor with a circular chest light thingy. I mean, it’s EXACTLY like the Mark VI, save for the chest piece.

The legs on this thing are really bent out of shape. I’m sure I’ll have to do some fixing after I unbox them. Paint apps on the Mark IV seemed extremely dirty, and since there were very few to choose from, Slangards and I had to settle for subpar figures.

Mark IV comes with the standard missle launcher, a stand, and three cards.

http://img202.imageshack.us/img202/7119/markvi.jpg
Mark VI

Mark VI has the exact same body as Mark IV, but with a triangular chest piece thingy. You asking where Mark V is? We think it’s the War Machine, which was nowhere to be seen at the event. Anyway, there’s another Mark VI - the one with the light-up body. I didn’t get that one, and I’ll talk about it more later.

Again, paint on it sucks and its legs are even more messed up. I do hope that it’s only because of the position in the packaging.

This thing is shortpacked, too. It comes with a launcher, a stand and the cards.

http://img517.imageshack.us/img517/5583/powerassault.jpg
Power Assault Armor

It’s one of the concept series figures. I like the look quite a bit, because it looks like it can take out armies with by merely flexing its badassery. I like this because the rocket launchers the other toys come with might look good with this thing. This thing was in abundance, and it comes with the usual launcher, stand, and cards.

I didn’t mind the paint app so much because it looks good dirty, like it’s war-torn.

http://img706.imageshack.us/img706/580/hypervelcity.jpg
Hypervelocity Armor

This looks nothing like the Hypervelocity armor from the comics. The description at the back makes it sound like the Stealth armor. And that, good friends, gives no one any logical reason to call this armor the “Hypervelocity” armor. It doesn’t even look streamlined or fast. I got it because it looks like an Iron Man armor and it might look good in the armory.

The bottomline for all these figures: I am disappointed. I don’t know how they’ll feel or look out of the box, but from what I can see, they are of really bad quality. They’ve got bad paint apps, some joint problems and they’re named weirdly. Be careful when picking out your figures from this line; it’s got some pretty bad lemons.

I did not get the following figures:

Mark VI Light-Up: It was a cool toy, but it looked like a night light when lit up. The light-up one was cool because the body looked very opaque but when the light inside it goes off, you can see that it is, in fact, translucent.

Deep Dive Armor: Dive Man, is that you?

Iron Monger: I just didn’t need him. The scuplt and paint apps on that thing looks really fucking good, though.

Click here to buy one of those 8″ War Machine figures before they get hoarded to hell by fuckhole hoarders.

God, I hope that we’ll get a chance at those 3.75″ War Machines and the comic series. I heard they had to postpone the announcement of when they’ll be released for some reason.

Crap paint or not, when they launch that 2nd wave, I’m there.

Isn’t it possible to repaint them? :3 Sorry, I’m a Gunpla fan and if there’s something wrong with the plamo, we repaint them to our liking.

Posted by Shabby at March 10, 2010, 9:53 pm

@Shabby, It’s possible, but we’re lazy bastards.

Plus toy fans like us were spoiled by the fancy paints of the original Marvel Legends and McFarlane era. The stand is “Why should we pay a premium price for the Marvel license if Hasbro isn’t going to do it’s damnedest to give us quality figures that look good out of the box?” If we need to repaint, then Hasbro’s doing something wrong.

Plus Plus, them Testor’s paints are damned expensive. What is it like P150 for a bottle of black? That’s out of our pocket. Considering there’s something like 50 toys in this new line, it’s going to hurt. We already complain about these things being P550.00 (and some are still doing so now that they’re 450).

Posted by slangards at March 12, 2010, 2:52 am

What you said is making me think that Bandai’s doing something wrong with Gunpla too. :| But I do understand that you have to get what you pay for.

First time I’ve heard of Testor paints. Are they made for Marvel figs? O_o

Posted by Shabby at March 14, 2010, 1:40 am

I don’t know what the two of you are saying. :(

I can’t paint my figures because I have no dexterity or talent or artistic sensibilities whatsoever.

Posted by comicology at March 16, 2010, 11:44 am

Hi, I’m new to the Iron Man lore.

I agree, with the prices of these figures we should be getting better paint apps. My mark iv has a bald patch on his head. :(

Just a question though, isn’t the suitcase armor the Mark V? or is it something else?

Posted by Meta Physical Menudo at March 16, 2010, 3:41 pm

@Meta Physical Menudo

First off, awesome name, man.

And yeah, I had some trouble finding really good ones. My Mark IV, thankfully, has good paint apps.

Mark V does seem to be the suitcase armor, but the toy is called Silver Centurion. I don’t know why.

Posted by comicology at March 16, 2010, 3:48 pm

I kinda got disappointed at first with this figures, i also collect joes, and their relatively cheaper and have a lot more accessories compared to this marvel (iron man) toys. It took me 15mins. choosing between a couple of Mark IVs. And I ended up getting the one with a bald patch on his head. Damn. But all was saved when I bought a comic series war machine, damn! it looks so freakishly good. I had a geekgasm when I opened it. hahaha.

The name of the figures are kinda weird huh? Even the packaging and descriptions of the armors are weird. Packaging says 2 launching missiles and we only get one. haha!

btw about the name, thanks! :)

Posted by Meta Physical Menudo at March 17, 2010, 3:51 pm

@Meta Physical Menudo

Did you attend the launch at Megamall?

I saw packaging for the portable armor thing in 6″ scale, and it said Mark V, which makes sense.

G.I. Joes are great. They’re cheaper and sometimes, their sculpts are better.

I haven’t opened up my War Machine yet. I will do it on video and post it on YouTube, and then maybe link it here.

Posted by comicology at March 17, 2010, 5:34 pm

Will wait for your review on war machine sir.

Sadly, i wasn’t able to attend the launch becoz of some personal matters. but I was able to score 1 war machine @ SM North. i guess they aren’t as short packed as I was expecting them to be or I’m just darn lucky. :)

The sad thing is last week saw a couple of 8″ War machine figs at TRU Trinoma, I had 2nd thoughts of buying one, now that I’m decided to buy it, I can’t seem to find one. Any info on where I could snag one of those babies?

Yup, joes are great, and thats why I’m happy with the 3.75″ line of Iron Man 2 coz their compatible with joes. :)

Thanks a lot!

Posted by Meta Physical Menudo at March 17, 2010, 6:26 pm

@Meta Physical Menudo, stocks of the 8″ War Machines was limited, even at the launch. I hear they’re being hoarded, too. If you really want one, I’d say go to Greenhills and just pay what Bim calls the “impatience fee”.

And the 3.75″ comic war machine is awesome. Can’t wait for the movie one.

Posted by slangards at March 19, 2010, 4:06 am

Damn…hoarded huh? that sucks….

Nah, I’ll be patient this time…. Another turn off for the 8″ is its articulation, so I’m not in hurry to acquire one, but I’m still determined to own one though.

I’ll probably pay the “impatience fee” if ever the 6″ war machine and mark VI comes out. Hopefully they reach our shores. :)

I’m still waiting for your review of the comic war machine sir. :)

Posted by Meta Physical Menudo at March 22, 2010, 3:21 pm

Looks like a giant kiddie toy to me, actually. That’s why I didn’t run after it like wild. Normally, I don’t mind paying the impatience fee for figures I really want.

Posted by comicology at March 24, 2010, 10:43 am

hahaha! a giant kiddie toy…That’s pretty accurate right there. :)

WOOOOW is grat figures!!!!

Good !!!!!

IRON MAN 2

in cinemas may 7 2010

Posted by Osg at April 14, 2010, 2:28 am

Actually, in the Philippines, they open April 30, so we’re getting it about a week before the US does.

Posted by comicology at April 14, 2010, 2:00 pm

The Deep Dive Armor was the best in the bunch, in my opinion. It looks almost like an entirely new character and the design isn’t some repaint of existing Iron Man movie figures. There’s a few shortcomings in terms of articulation but, otherwise, that’s the only Iron Man 2 figure I bought–unless the prices drop enough for me to start scooping up more Deep Dive Armors.
