Iron Man 2 Review

April 29, 2010

The smoke has cleared and the dust has settled. How did Iron Man 2 fare?

I saw Iron Man 2 last April 29th at a premiere! Many thanks to British School of Manila! Check out their programme.

Like I said, I saw it last April 29th, but it did take me a few days to put this in writing because I had to gather my thoughts. Iron Man 2 had me conflicted. After much soul searching and debate, quite honestly, Iron Man 2 was not what I expected. To put it bluntly, parts of it disappointed me immensely. There were moments of high pitched geekgasm squeeing and there were moments of “Wait, what? Oh, come on.”

Now, I want to point out to everyone that I will try to keep this review as spoiler-free as possible. Of course, this may not be possible with all the points I want to make, so before I mention a spoiler, I’ll give you a warning and I’ll put spoilers in italics. Cool? Cool.

What I liked:

- I saw a lot of Matt Fraction in the story for some reason. Was he a consultant?

- The main plot was a mixture of what felt to me like Demon in a Bottle and Armor Wars, which are probably every other fucking Iron Man story ever written.

- All the Iron Man suits looked fucking crazy awesome. So did War Machine. The HUDs were all cool enough to make me wish hard they really existed or at least, exist before I die. Made me think that the iPad’s got nothing on Tony Stark.

- Black Widow action scenes were incredibly believable. She fought the way I always imagined a Black Widow to fight, and Scarlett Johansson (or her double) did a spectacular job, surprisingly.

- RDJ was spot-on as Tony Stark. He was brilliant.

http://img101.imageshack.us/img101/9991/rdj.jpg

Now, after spending a few minutes figuring out a way to not make this sound like I’m gay for Robert Downey, Jr., I came to the conclusion that there is no getting around it. I just merely have to man up and say that RDJ pulled off the classic Tony Stark wit, charm and drunken stupor perfectly. There, I said it.

- Mickey Rourke was fantastic. He does creepy evil dude quite well. It would’ve served his character to eventually be Crimson Dynamo, though, but he pulled off Whiplash well, too.

http://img202.imageshack.us/img202/5514/rourke.jpg

- The fighting, while short, was really good. However, I was left craving for more - much, much more. The badassery did not disappoint, though!

- Fucking Nick Fury. Okay, he didn’t do much, and he was there really to set up Avengers or Thor, maybe. It could’ve used a little more Nick Fury involvement to make him matter a little bit more. Nonetheless, Mr. Samuel L. Jackson rocked it hard.

http://img38.imageshack.us/img38/2071/samjackson.jpg

What I didn’t like so much:

- Too much going on in too little time. Ths it the pitfall for most comic book movies. Iron Man was thankfully able to fly past this, but Iron Man 2 didn’t do as well. Here, we’ve got two main villains, a super secret world peace keeping agency, the government paws, trouble with Stark Industries, and *SPOILER ALERT* Tony’s health problems. Normally, that amount of stuff going on would be cool if the story was told well enough to explain and conclude everything.

Such was not the case for Iron Man 2.

- Don Cheadle does, indeed, look perpetually starving.

And War Machine’s history felt wonky and incomplete. I mean, I’ve got this weird love/hate relationship with War Machine in the movie. He’s cool and all, but his armor wasn’t *SPOILER ALERT* developed by Stark. Sure, it was the Mark II, but all the armaments were Hammer’s. Therefore, the War Machine isn’t completely StarkTech.

The argument here would’ve been that Stark no longer makes weapons, so making War Machine would’ve totally been inappropriate. Plus, he’s no longer the contractor for the US Military, which would make manufacturing weapons illegal. It was also his claim that the Iron Man was not a weapon.

However, the best Tony Stark scenes in the first movie were the ones in which he was making developments and improvements upon the Iron Man suit to overcome specific problems. If the War Machine had been developed to specifically counteract a threat, that would’ve made more sense and given WM a little more cred. He could’ve then given the suit to the Military for James Rhodes to pilot. That’s just me, though. War Machine should be fully StarkTech.

- Not enough War Machine. By that, I mean, I wish he had a little more screen time. I think he could’ve done more and made a bigger impact. I wish someone actually referred to him as fucken’ War Machine, just like the first movie referred to Iron Man as Iron Man at the end. The words “War Machine” were nothing more than a taunt; one that barely made any sense at all.

http://img263.imageshack.us/img263/7752/warmachinen.jpg

- Ending fight scene was so fucking disappointing, it almost hurts. No epic battle against a villain? No great desperate tactic? Was that it? The final fight against *SPOILER WARNING* Whiplash in armor lasted fucking 2 minutes, tops! What the fuck, right?

- Too much fanservice, not enough story development or explanations. I mean, *SPOILER ALERT* “new element,” Captain America shield- so what? Vibranium? They didn’t even fucking mention it. A means to set up the Avengers? It did nothing for the story. They barely explained what that fucking element was or what it does or why it does what it does. It just does it because it does it. It relied too much on the miracle exception which is only acceptable to a certain extent. Make something up, goddamn it.

Also, didn’t Rhodes remove the Arc Reactor from the Mark II suit before Justin Hammer got to it? What happened there?

- Iron Man was no hero. *SPOLER ALERT* It was a story of how the great Iron Man saved… himself. There was no threat to the universe. There was no threat to galaxy. There was no threat to the world. There was no threat on the United States. There was no threat to space nor time that Iron Man had to save us all from. Tony Stark saved himself and his company. Sure, it would’ve made for a moving tale, but it fell short at even that.

- Mickey Rourke was so good, you couldn’t understand a fucking word he said.

- Minor gripe: If you were going to eventually name the Black Widow Natalia Romanoff, why would you not give her a Russian line or an English line with a Russian accent? Just one? No? K.

http://img263.imageshack.us/img263/2254/scarjo.jpg

I really do not think Iron Man 2 was bad. In fact, it wasn’t, at all! Iron Man 2 does NOT suck! It just didn’t melt my face through awesome like the first one did. Iron Man 2 is good, not mind blowingly great. It’s still definitely cool to watch and I’m still going to watch it one more time. I hope this time around, it’ll be better.

http://img697.imageshack.us/img697/451/59541230.jpg

Iron Man 2 gets 3 out of 5 Mighty Mugg Mark VI’s. It isn’t a bad movie, folks. It was just okay.

Iron Man Month Over at Marvel

Everyone’s going INSANE for Iron Man! And I fucking love it! I’ve always been a fan of the Golden Avenger way, way, way before the movie hit and I’m ecstatic to see people finally showing Tony some love. Marvel’s been milking it dry, too, and I love them for it. We’ve got tons of Stark Expo viral videos, all of which are cool, product placements with Reese’s, 7-11 and Dr. Pepper, a fan-fucking-tastic toy line (Marvel Universe, Marvel Legends, Marvel Select, Hot Toys, Mighty Muggs just to mention a few), articles over at Marvel.com, contests and a fucking video game.

There’s so much, it’s hard to pin down where to start. First off, lemme link you to two of the latest viral videos.

All I can say is that I fucking want a STARKHUD. iPod? iPad? Fuck them. They got nothing on the STARKHUD!

Have you seen the two latest commercials? They’re so effective, I wanna head over to a 7-11 and buy me some Reese’s.

And, the video game that Sega claims to have improved by listening to gamer complaints has a new video out. It is nothing short of breathtaking awesomeness.

I’ll be honest with all of you. I HAVE A MASSIVE ERECTION RIGHT NOW! ONE SO HUGE IT CAN IMPREGNATE ALL WHO READ THIS!

Ehem. Sorry.

Marvel.com wrote an article about how real world science could actually work to bring Stark’s interface with his gadgets and suit to fruition. All you science nerds, click here to read it.

And finally, check out what the girlfriend got.

Yes, that is what it looks like. Watch out for a full review of that here on Comicology: The Study of Awesome.

Kick-Ass Movie Review

I’m sure every blogger and his cousin have written about Kick Ass, so I probably shouldn’t go into a lot of detail.

To make it easier to digest (and fucking write), I’ll break it down into bulletpoints. Also, I’ll try to make it spoiler-free because I want you guys to watch it. Again, however, I proved that a less-than-perfect viewing experience can seriously ruin a great movie.

http://img8.imageshack.us/img8/2708/shutupkickassposterh.jpg

The Good

  • Great comic book movie. That being said, it is highly targeted to a specific demographic. As a superhero fan, this aroused my fantasies a great deal. People who aren’t fans of the genre or the whole superhero concept in itself might be turned off from it because it doesn’t really bring you through that great of an emotional/ intellectual rollercoaster. It aint no Citizen Kane, for sure, but that’s not to say it won’t tug on your heart strings.
  •  The violence. To me, there’s a certain level of make-believe violence that makes it bad-ass. Anything over that just makes it disturbing. And that line is thin as a hair strand. Anything cool can turn into plain wrong with just a single misplaced camera angle or a special effect taken a bit too far. Watchmen actually had a few scenes that were hard for me to swallow, especially with the uncut version. The last movie with high levels of violence that didn’t go over that line was 300. Kick-Ass toed the line perfectly.
  • The villain. More often than not, I like my heroes when I love their villains. The sole exception to this rule is Iron Man but then again, he does go toe to toe with Dr. Doom once in a while. Kick-Ass’ main villain, Frank D’Amico, is a mean motherfucker who presented a very real threat; and getting rid of him was a legitimate concern. Mark Strong played it really well, too.
  • Believability. Okay, I know it’s not a word, but see, that’s exactly how Kick-Ass made me feel. Things played out with some far fetched shit (read: Hit-Girl) but in that universe, it seemed very plausible. The world created made shit like that possible and believable.
  • Acting and dialogue. The plot was in no way cookie cutter. The dialogue was “real” when it needed to be and cheesy when it called for it. However, it worked. It all worked.
  • The soundtrack. I really wouldn’t be able to identify the songs used in the movie, but that’s not because they were not memorable. Far from it, in fact. It added so much charm to each scene that you would digest it as a whole instead of breaking it down to basic core elements.
  • FPS scene. I dont want to say any more because it’s spoilery, but when you see it,  you’ll shit brix.
  • Hit-Girl. She is awesome. And yes, Kick-Ass does indirectly promote pedophilia.
  • Balisong. The fact that they did trace its roots back to the Philippines was mindblowing.
  • Nicholas Cage. I love Nic Cage, no matter what everyone says!

http://img707.imageshack.us/img707/4272/kickassk.jpg

The Bad

  • Nicolas Cage. He creeps me out sometimes.
  • The douchers sitting behind  us at the theater.

So now, Mark Millar has an awesome movie under his belt. He did claim to write the comic for movie purposes and I think it worked out fucking well even though there were same key changes, like Dave and Katie’s relationship or the revelation of Red Mist. Actually, know what, it was changed quite a bit.

Millar does shine when writing things that have no tied down characterization rules or continuity behind his stories. This is why Ultimates was good, for a time, and why Civil War felt so out-of-character. I must say, however, good job, Mr. Millar. Good job.

Four and a half JRJR drawn Hit-Girls out of five! Not bad, eh? Not bad at all!

Free Comic Book Day

April 25, 2010

It’s like Christmas for comic book nerds everywhere - Free Comic Book Day.

http://img163.imageshack.us/img163/390/fcbd.jpg

It’ll happen on the first Saturday of May - May 21, 2010. Check out Free Comic Book Day dot Com for more info. It’s pretty self explanatory, really. It is a day in which you can get certain comic books for free. Over at Druid’s Keep, FCBD promptly starts at 12nn. Felix says same deal as last year.

At this time, I’d also like to plug Fourth Wall Comics. Eric’s a great guy and I feel bad I haven’t dropped by as much as I should. Anyway, Fourth Wall is over at 5082 Filmore Street, Palanan, Makati City. Click on the link to find out more.

http://img59.imageshack.us/img59/8931/1174859768j4mpgy0e1.jpg
Image was ganked from ComicSpace. Thanks, guys.

Unfortunately, unlike every good comic geek worth his stack, I have yet to fully partake of Free Comic Book Day. I mean, I drop by, grab my free comics, chat a little but then I’m normally off to somewhere else. This year, I plan to really be part of FCBD. See you guys there!

Marvel VS Capcom 3 Wishlist and Speculations

April 22, 2010

Marvel VS Capcom 3 is already old news. It’s been announced and a trailer’s out.

We were also treated to some teaser pics, from where we can make our speculations. From the silhouettes, we can take a stab at who they could be. Some of them are painfully obvious, which is good, but that doesn’t help build up the surprise when the characters are finally revealed. I got all my images from Marvel.com. Check out who I’ve figured out so far.

http://img263.imageshack.us/img263/18/mvc3athumb.jpg
Click on the image for a larger version

 http://img85.imageshack.us/img85/1432/mvc3b.jpg

If you would be so kind as to tell me if I got someone wrong or if you wanna supply me with some names, that’d be great. I’m not so familiar with all the Capcom characters, but I think I know the pretty common ones.

WISHLIST

In the last game, they had a ton of characters - 56 to be exact. I hope they keep the number of characters high for this one, too, even though it’s in 3D, instead of sprites.  Because I’m a nerd, I have come up with a dream list of characters. C’mon, admit it, you did, too.

Daredevil - This man, apart from the unpopular Marvel Nemesis: Rise of the Imperfects, has never been in a full blown arcade fighting game. For a guy whose sole repertoire is being blind and kicking ass, he has yet to be given the chance to face off with Ryu, a Darkstalker, or some pirate girl.
likelihood: Slim to nill

Dante - I’m almost 100% sure he’ll be put in just because he’s popular. Besides, he has those wicked sword attacks, the cool gun attacks and that fist no one uses all coupled with a really dynamic fighting style. He’s perfect for a fighting game. Only a retard wouldn’t put him in.
likelihood: High

Any Megaman villain from the original series - I really wouldn’t mind to see Quick Man or Guts Man or Dive Man or hell, even fucking Skull Man. Let’s give the Blue Bomber some competition.
likelihood: Slim to moderate

Oh, and speaking of skulls -

SkulloMania - This guy is wacky and has a crazy fighting style that fits perfectly in a game like this. His backstory involves his wanting to be a super hero, thus donning his ridiculous costume. So, why not let him duke it out with real super heroes?

Edit: I was informed that the company that made Street Fighter EX retained rights to their characters - SkulloMania, Pullum, Darun (100% more bad ass than Hakan, by the way), D. Dark, Cracker Jack and others. Therefore, Capcom cannot use them in any game.
likelihood: Absolutely nill

http://img202.imageshack.us/img202/430/hahan.gif

Hawkeye - Projectile moves galore with this dude. He’ll have a mean bow melee game, and an even meaner long range game. Airborne raining arrows, a 100 arrow barrage attack, an exploding arrow trick, a full screen array of arrows - the possibilities are limitless with this guy.
likelihood: Slim to moderate

Iron Fist - Kung fu super hero. What’s not to love? Pit him against Ryu to see who the true martial artist is!
likelihood: Slim

Okay, I’m sure I could think of some more, and I’ll probably mention them in some other article. For now, I’ll leave you guys at that.

Who is on your wishlist? Tell us in the comments.

They ran out of the P750 ones.

No Pain

I used to have motto, which applied to most of the things I did with my life. It was “No pain, no pain.” If it didn’t hurt, then, well, good. I, seemingly, have thrown that motto out the window and started embracing a new one - “I’m in pain, please step away from me.”

Back in the early 2000’s, I kept a livejournal account for emo stuff. Seriously, though, I have never felt pain like I did earlier tonight. I should’ve kept it alive to talk about what I went through  over at Fitness First. There is no muscle in my body that does not ache. On a scale of 1-10, 1 being a poke, 10 being Superman punching you THROUGH THE FACE, I’m at about 9.9.

The Lose Big Programme isn’t a boot camp, but seriously, I am being put through a bright version of what a comic book nerd would classify as hell with pipe-in workout music and free coffee, soft drinks and water.

http://img707.imageshack.us/img707/7408/losebig.jpg

Listen, comic book fans everywhere. This is what our stereotype is:

http://img706.imageshack.us/img706/1925/comicguy.png
Thanks, Matt Groening. Thanks a lot.

Isn’t it time we start doing something about it? Okay, sure, us geeks have done plenty. There are some pretty buff geeks out there, like Heubert Michael Khan who does look like he can bench press two cars at the end of a very strong steel bar. But, that’s just one guy. What about the rest of us? Are we satisfied withthe Comic Book Guy look?

http://img388.imageshack.us/img388/1783/renaissance62.jpg
This is Heubert MIchael Khan. He draws well and can eat you for breakfast.

Seriously, though, when I start to look ripped and Hulked out, all this sweating and not being in front of a computer will pay off. Just you wait and see. I currently weigh 216 pounds (I am a fat motherfucker) and my BMI is at about 31 or so (I am an obese motherfucker). Let’s see how far I can bring it down.

The cool thing is that they’re aware of my knee injuries - a torn lateral miniscus - and they work around it. I was stupid enough to try the treadmill, which is exactly like jogging, only you don’t move very far. That’s exactly how I injured the knee in the first place. They insisted that I try the bike, but I wanted to know what my knee can do. Apparently, not a whole fucking lot. My bad.

Check out the Lose Big Programme website and their facebook fanpage if you want to not be a chubby nerd and have a Matt Murdock body. He is about as charming as a stick of shit, but he still bangs girls like Elektra and Black Widow. Seriously, it’s the abs.

Are You An Avenger?

April 16, 2010

Good news, you superhero wanna-be guys! Did you always feel that you deserved to be an Avenger? Now, you can apply and get the chance for your picture/headshot to appear on the first issue of Avengers, which ships out on May 19, 2010!

This is open to people 18 years old and above. Anyone younger than that is not permitted to save the world.

http://img402.imageshack.us/img402/6065/areyouanavenger.jpg

Here’s how you join. Go to IamAnAvenger.Marvel.com by clicking here

http://img121.imageshack.us/img121/9659/areyouanavenger1.jpg

I’ll submit my headshot later tonight.

Also, speaking of Avengers, I’ve been hearing some rumors rumbling around the grapevine that Iron Man 2 will have an extra scene, just like the one from the first movie. I expected as much. The extra scene involves … DUN DUN DUN!!! CAPTAIN AMERICA AND THOR! I’m sure the theater cleaning guy will be using industrial detergent to get the smell of my geek juice off the seats for weeks.

More Iron Man 2 Goodness

April 14, 2010

All this hype about Iron Man has gotten me all feeling tingly inside. I’ll make this short and sweet since my body is in so much pain right now, it’s unbelievable that I have yet to pass out.

Much love for Stan Lee’s cameos. I hope that man never dies. Like, ever. I’m so awesome’d that he’s in the new Dr. Pepper commercial for Iron Man 2 goodies.

As cool as that is, I am slightly disappointed that we won’t get any Iron Man 2 De. Pepper cans. It would’ve been cool to have one. Maybe Subic has em’?

Another cool Iron Man 2 morsel would be the interactive trailer. We’ve all seen the first couple trailers and most TV spots, but the interactive trailer just takes the cake, man. It’s got all the info you’d want. It basically plays the second trailer. As you pass through certain check points in the video, a screen with info about certain characters or events gets unlocked.

http://img689.imageshack.us/img689/946/trailery.jpg

Click here or on the screenshot to go to the Interactive trailer.

Every time a screen gets unlocked, it will appear on top. Click on it at any time and you’ll be given some screens with some info or pics. If you want to continue to play the video, click the center. You should faintly see the video in the background. Click on the play button.

Try it out, it’s pretty fun.

Physically Fit!

April 13, 2010

Let’s test your powers of observation. What do these guys have in common?

http://img243.imageshack.us/img243/6072/muscles.jpg

If you guessed MUSCLES, then you’d be absolutely correct. Spandex would also have been an acceptable answer, but it’s their muscles that make all that spandex possible.

For far too long, us nerds have been stereotyped as cheeto-munching basement-living fatties, larely thanks to the Simpson’s Comic Book Guy and real life. ENOUGH! NO MORE! This is why I have decided to enroll in Fitness First’s Lose Big Programme. No, really, I did.

The Lose Big Programme is a 13 week course, based on setting goals and achieving them.

That’s me, Peter Juan, and Joriben, looking like we don’t really know what we got ourselves into. I’ll share more details as soon as they come to light, but for now, let’s just say I’m shaking in my little booties.

The first day of training was really more of an orientation. It actually helped calm my nerves quite a bit.

This guy right here is Tony Howett, the Club General Manager of Fitness First in RSC. He, and his team of 3 trainers and 1 nutrionis, explained everything to us. Right now, it seems quite doable, but really, despite my size, I am just one giant vagina. I’ll talk about this in more detail soon, when everything’s clear to me. Here’s hoping I don’t pass out!

Edit: Okay, so why am I really doing it?

I want to be fit enough to cosplay and I don’t want to look like this guy:

Comic of the Week: Deadpool & Cable #025

April 11, 2010

I haven’t done a CotW in a while because I’m lazy. To make up for it, I’m making one now, and no, it won’t be about Uncanny X-Men #523 because everyone’s talking about it already. Instead, I’ll review something very related to it. See, Uncanny X-Men #525 is already well on its way along Second Coming, and we all know how it started in Messiah Complex. However, do we know how Cable got to the girl and whose help he counted on?

Batman Arkham Asylum: Game of the Year Edition

April 9, 2010

For the past few days, I had found myself uninterested in my current PS3 games for a number of reasons:

- Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 is good for geekery but is a horrible video game
- I just finished Brutal Legend, which was awesome. DECAPITATTTIIIIOOONNN!!!
- NBA 2k10 is only fun when playing with others
- There are just so many good games out there

I was choosing between Batman: Arkham Asylum GOTY or God of War III. Seeing that GOW3 has only just been released and is still expensive, and even the second hand ones are still a bit pricey (especially now that I’ll be out of a regular paying job), I decided to go with Batman AA GOTY, which only set me back P1850 at Datablitz, Greenbelt. It’s even cheaper than the SRP of the original edition.

The GOTY edition comes in 3D! It even comes with two old school 3D  glasses, one’s Batman themed, and the other, Joker themed.

Unfortunately, the 3D is extremely distracting, because of all the distorted colors. It’s cool and all, but it feels gimmicky because the elements don’t really pop out, like in movies. You’ll just see one element seem to be on a plane higher or lower than the rest. I think the color distortion doesn’t make having the 3D on worth it, though it’s cool to show off once in a while.

The GOTY edition comes with the DLC challenge maps, 6 of them. You have to download Joker, though.

Unfortunately, the R1 launches in May, so I had to settle for the R2 one, because I’m impatient. I’ll have to make a Japanese PSN account to download Joker. I don’t regret getting it, though. It’s an awesome game. I might make a review eventually.

I’m marking my calendar and buying tickets way in advance. April 30, 2010 will be like fucking Christmas for me. And, to entice us even further, here’s a sneak peak:

Just watch it in full screen because it is made of purified badassery.

This is another TV spot for Iron Man 2. There are a couple new scenes, including one where ScarJo speaks in an American accent. So, is it safe to assume that the Black Widow, named Natasha Romanov, is American? Then again, Black Widow is a master spy and she can use multiple accents flawlessly.

And, for those who absolutely cannot wait, here are a few more new images:

Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions

April 3, 2010

I just got back from a vacation so I couldn’t post an April Fool’s entry, so that’s a bit disappointing because I do it every year. It was a great vacation anyway, so it’s all good. I went to Cagbalite Island, at Pensacola resort.

Arriving home, I flipped on my PC and headed straight to YouTube. Lo and behold, the perfect way to end my vacation - Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions game trailer!

From what I gather, it features playing as Spider-Man from different universes. So far, 616 and Noir versions of Spider-Man have been revealed. Two more versions will come soon. Right now, it’s anyone’s guess, but my fearless predictions would be:
