Comicology at ToyCon 2010!
June 21, 2010We’re hot off the heels of the country’s premiere pop culture event. And as it has always been, the event was a hodge podge of many different geekeries and cultures - you’ve got the American comics, the Korean music and Japanese… well, Japanese everything. I was able to go on the first day but sadly was unable to attend day 2, which is normally my favorite day. Regardless of the limited time I spent at the con, it was a fun trip. Here’s what I found!

Warning: This post has a bunch of pics.
But first, join me and my shaky camera as we walk through the halls of ToyCon!
For years now, ToyCon has always followed a formula. It works and if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. This year, it felt as if some minor changes were made to the flow and format, which made the experience a little more enjoyable. There were definitely more sponsors this year. It does stay true to its core, which is what the fans really want, but it felt like it matured a little bit.
Every year, you see a plethora of geeks representing different geekdoms - you’ve got the toy collectors, the comic book nerds, the otakus, the cosplayers and shutterbugs. There were so many photographers that I kinda felt intimidated whenever I would bring out my puny point and shoot. I felt like an Asian walking around in an NBA shower room.
I go mainly as a toy lover and comic book nerd. I wouldn’t exactly call myself a toy collector per se, because I only buy Marvel braned stuff and I have so few; I just like displaying them. The geekery of the people at the con is insane, and that goes double for the owners of the displays. It’s a whole other level with those folks.

My haul, as displayed at the Con

This is from that group of G.I. Joe guys. I forgot what they’re called. My bad.

I was quite happy to see the Gameops guys with probably the most interactive display around.

One of the coolest finds of this year’s ToyCon was this really cool shop selling Filipinized pop culture characters. You could check them out at their Facebook page and their Blogspot. I want to get the Spider-Man/Venom one. Shirts are a bit pricey though, at P550 a pop.

ToyCon wouldn’t be ToyCon without the cosplay. I seriously think cosplay is what makes ToyCon so hot (I also meant that literally.)

Best Snake Eyes costume EVER!

Is this the Thor movie costume? We salute you, sir.
They’ve also got the pros at the event, as well.

Yes, that is the goddamned Batman.

And, of course, you’ve got the Queen of Cosplay herself, Alodia Gosengfiao and some other lesser known cosplayer.
To cap it all off, I’d like to show you what I was able to score for myself.

All in all, the experience was a total fucking hoot! ToyCon really is Christmas coming early to geeks in the Philippines. Congratulations to Az and the ToyCon team, the sellers, the cosplayers and everyone who attended. This was an epic one. I’m looking forward to next year’s ToyCon.

Posted by slangards at June 21, 2010, 9:20 pmI love that people are now going out of their way to make good costumes to cosplay. Awesome coverage bro!
And yes, I think the lesser known cosplayer was Ashley.
@eeghow
Yeah, a lot of people corrected me already. I actually knew that. I was just trying to be funny.
And failed.
@rocky
Awesome meeting you guys finally. I’ve been a Tim Crumper escapade follower for a long time now.

I thought that was you! I kinda had to do a double take but figured, if it were you, you would’ve said something. I didn’t wanna look like a tool and say “Hey, don’t I know you?” and it’ll turn out that I don’t and I’d look like I was hitting on someone.
@slangards
That I did, and I really frickin’ love it! Looks so much better than the red one.

Yeah, man. The cosplay gets better every year. The Iron Man and War Machine guys didn’t show up, though.

Posted by Matthew at June 23, 2010, 5:45 pm@Matthew
I totally knew it was Ashely, okay? I was just joking. Don’t tell on me, kk? I’m sure fanboys would come a-knockin’.
Anyway, the Spider-Man was P900 and the Daredevil went for P1500 - both were pretty cheap.
Posted by comicology at June 23, 2010, 6:20 pmThat photo you’ve got of Alodia, the girl you’re referring to as “a lesser known cosplayer” is actually her sister, Ashley. She’s also quite famous.
Hi! The G.I. Joe guys you’re referring to belong to Toy Soldier 1:18.
And I actually laughed at the “lesser-known cosplayer” quip. :p Thankfully, I tend to use a bit of dry humor as well.
Bakit ba bulag ang mga tao dito? Nagpapatawa nga lang daw sya dun sa lesser known cosplayer! Hayzz…
Posted by Ah Ewan. at June 23, 2010, 8:47 pm@Vanessa
Yes, I know, I know. I just made fun of the fact that there are “factions” within the fan community - Team Alodia and Team Ashley. I guess you guys know which team I’d pick if I had to.
Posted by comicology at June 23, 2010, 11:00 pm@Edgar Ilaga
Yes! Yes! Toy Soldier 1:18! Thank you! I actually went to college with one of those guys but he doesn’t remember me. I remember him because he was part of the pep squad.
And thank you for liking the “lesser known cosplayer”bit.
Posted by comicology at June 23, 2010, 11:01 pm@Ah Ewan
Hehehe, apparently, di masyado nakakatawa yung sinabi ko, pero ayos lang yan. I meant no offense to anyone, k?
Posted by comicology at June 23, 2010, 11:02 pm@comicology
don’t worry, I won’t tell
@comicology:
No problem! Oh, and the reason that the Iron Man/War Machine costumes you were looking for weren’t there was because the builders were cosplaying as something else (specifically, Master Gundam and Batman Killgear - winners in the Anime/Manga and DC Comics special category, respectively). Both of them are my friends from high school.
Posted by Edgar Ilaga at June 25, 2010, 3:24 pm@Edgar Ilaga
Do you think I could get in touch with those guys so I can write about them here?
Posted by comicology at June 25, 2010, 6:09 pm@comicology:
Hmm. Why not? Send me a message over at my e-mail add and I’ll hook you up with Bram and the gang. BTW, he was featured over at “Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho” last June 26.
Posted by Edgar Ilaga at June 30, 2010, 5:10 pmHey Edgar. I actually don’t get to see your email address. i.ph keeps that information to themselves.
Posted by comicology at July 1, 2010, 4:02 pmthanks for featuring our shirts. check our site: electromagnetictentacle.blogspot.com and add us on FB. There will be more designs in the future. Fyi, we lowered our price to P500.

Isn’t the lesser known cosplayer her sister? xD
