Over the weekend, Megamall was rocked by geeks and freaks thanks to the second Metro Comic Con. The defining factor of the Metro Comic Con has always been its focus on the industry over collectibles, though it would be unfair to say that the collectibles got shafted - there was still a ton of those at the event, albeit not as much as, say, TagCom or ToyCon. I think that’s actually quite healthy so that the Comic Con doesn’t become another event clone.

It’s great to see indie comic book creators getting their time in the spotlight, being shared with the more commercially successful artists who worked for international publishers who I would’ve totally gone fan boy/ gay for if I had a little less self control.

Comic Con wouldn’t be a comic convention if not for, you guessed it right, retarded children, COMICS. I have to admit that the turnout for the event was a little underwhelming. I came in way past opening and I had absolutely no trouble acquiring a ticket and enterting the venue despite it being smaller than the space allotted for the ToyCon. It kinda goes to show that the comic book geekdom niche is regretfully small.

The fanbase, however, is a devoted lot. I mean, fanboyism and geekery did evolve out of comic books, being the grand daddy of most pop culture geekeries all over the world. Most of the ones who did show up showed genuine love for the medium and the artists.

Among the attendees were Gerry Alinguilan, Paul Michael Ignacio, Leinil Yu, Carlos Pagulayan, Jeffery Huet, Gilbert Monsanto, Gener Pedrina, Gio Paredes, and a ton of others big names.

The industry veterans like Don Santos and Jun Lofamia were there and I was glad to see them being adored by fans, still.

I wanted this Daredevil sketch by Don Santos, but I didn’t have any more cash left. I regret not buying it.

Another great addition to the Comic Con, which is akin to most international conventions, is the panel, which covered a wide range of topics from gaming to animation.

Hello people who have the job I dreamed ever since I was a wee lad.

Now, any event wouldn’t be complete with cosplayers. I don’t think Saturday was cosplay day but they came in spades.

These conventions have become an excuse to let your freak on. And freak on, they did. One day, I’ll be thin enough to cosplay Daredevil. One day, goddamn it.

Ernest Hernandez, the primary organizer of the Metro Comic Con is a huge statue collector so it would make sense that the best statues make an appearance, yeah? Check out that Flash.

I had promised myself not to spend a cent during the event but it was hard to resist. My haul:

Book 2 of Trese
3 issues of Kalayaan
2 collection of Kubori Kikiam (A gem of a find. I will devote a whole post to this)
2 issues of Bayan Knights
1 issue of Ang Astiging Boy Ipis

I will write about Trese and Kubori Kikiam because they ARE AWESOME!

You’d love Kubori Kikiam, man. It’s hilarious.

Bayan Knights is a great idea! I just wish the storylines get a little less muddled. It gets confusing because of too many characters and I end up not connecting with any of them.

Yeah, I’d recommend “Where Bold Star go to Die”, too. Not a superhero book, but an interesting read.

Did you get the ashcan of the first chapter of the new Trese collection? That’s basically all I got.
